"Water for Horses"

Was driving back to my home in Delco, from Lancaster County, through Chester County.  Did a significant portion of the trip on 896.

A bunch of Amish farms on the way had the usual summertime Water for Horses signs.  It was 90 something F and 90 something % humidity.

One thing occurred to me:  Do they charge each other for watering their horses?  Because they are some chiseling mofo's.

I know they screw every last cent out of the Englishmen in any/all commercial transactions, but do they screw each other too for horse water?

Inquiring minds want to know.

(I bet they probably do, the more thirsty the horse, the more I bet they charge).

Got some rain last night... around 5.5" in an hours time.  Got called in to work scraping and clearing debries off roadways.  Storm runoff washed the asphalt off quite a few roadways, but all were
made passable today.  We'll be fixing damage from this storm for months.

You guys have been busy I see.  Route 230 was recently repaved in and around Elizabethtown.
It was an interesting driving experience: Some manhole coves were flush with the street, others, about half, were nearly an inch Higher than the street a block or two away.

They haven't paved shit around here, they'll probably follow their usual MO of waiting until school gets back in session to totally fuck up traffic on yet another level.

Last week was the 15th anniversary of the Quecreek mining rescue in Somerset PA.

They did a formal ceremony to commemorate the event and my son's cub scout troop was invited to perform the colors at the ceremony.

Mine's in the front row, third from right. He has his old man's steely glare

My father in-law (wife's step-father actually) was at the event with my son and had a cameo shot as a ceremony attendee in the local news clips.

He's half Filipino and half Chinese -- the media didn't search him out at all

eta: My wife just reminded me that Gov. Schweiker (Gov at the time of the rescue) was present as a speaker at the event that day and actively sought out my father in-law to say hello to him in person. "Look, there's someone not white" -- photo op

Interesting day:
When I went to work this morning a Turkey Hill was advertising gas prices for $2.49
When I quit work this afternoon the same location's price went up 20¢
I was lucky: Other locations the price went up 30¢

1) I have a 2 liter of Frozen Run Birch Beer in my fridge right now, like always because it's awesome.
2) Scrapple is awesome too. Anyone who says otherwise, is wrong.
3) Yuengling is not the PA version of PBR! It is not Obama's favorite beer! Fucking idiots.
4) All of the PA Dutch pot pies are awesome.
5) Whoopie Pies are great but they should have given them Shoofly Pie though.

The Irish People Try guys amuse the hell out of me, and they actually did a PA Dutch food video:

Irish People Try Pennsylvania Dutch Food

...and for the most part the Irish are way less stupid than the West Coasters.

Friday evening.
Avatar change for the weekend
Surfing Arfcom while sipping Birch Beer soda from the bottle.

Birch Beer is NOT Root Beer.  There IS a difference.

When I was young and before we moved to NYC there was a Birch Beer tree/bush near me.
Me and my Friends would sometimes go the the plant and break off a twig, strip off the leaves and chew the twig.  I forget how long we chewed the trig before the flavor ran out, but I know it was more than a few minutes at a time.

Birch Beer Soda. I honestly forget the last time I had some.

Blehh.   I hated birch beer as a kid.  We went to parties, and all they had to drink was beer... and birch beer.   Not even any fukkin' water.

Haven't had any in like 40 years, maybe I should try some again.

Same people that make the Carnival Ice Cream?  Used to eat that stuff... one clear plastic bucket at a time.

Spent my afternoon mowing hay... 9' at a time.    Best second cutting I've had in years though.

Black Cherry soda.
Loved it.

The cherry colas that are being released now don't have the same flavors I enjoyed when I was a kid.

Meanwhile I've noticed that PA gas prices are slowly going down.
In some locations the prices are almost reasonable.
You have to look for them, but they're out there.

Just go to the map and move it to your AO

Genny Cream Ale must be 16 oz. bottles, not cans.

I remember when I moved from PA to IN. I asked for Genny Cream Ale in a store. The lady looked at me with disgust and said: "That's an EASTERN beer."

You win some, you lose some.

The roads in and around E-Town are fantastic.  Well done to the crews!

On the other hand Route 30 East bound from the junction of PA 116 to about where PA 462 starts is interesting.  While the road is smooth from start to finish there are areas where the asphalt wasn't properly spread.  There are places where the roadway might as well be a frozen dirt road from the bumps.  For the most part the Crews did very well.  But watch out for them bumps.
