This is the letter that TJ4FUN mailed to me, he received this from the ATF concerning pinning a CAR style stock in the collapsed position.

The real question is how would one define "permanently welded"?

That's really good to know, since I did exactly that to the Wifes M4gery.

Good to know I'm legal!

Thanks for the post, good info.

BTW, in reading the letter, on the first page they tell you a collapsing or folding butt stock is illegal, and again on the second page.

Are you sure the reply came from the BATF, or did it come from the ----

Government Office of Redundancy Office

Wow, a whole new avenue for me to explore!  I wonder how this would fly here in Jersey...  The real question is, who is going to sell me a fixed 'closed' stock?  *rustling of money fills the air*[:D]

edited to add:  Anthony, could you possibly mail me a copy of that letter?

Rob, I may be able to help you with both requests [:D].

This is awesome! I wanted to do the exact thing, but was nervous about sending a letter to the ATF asking to see if it was alright. I better print this thread, I might need it in the future.

Unfortunately, I don't think this tells us anything new.  I believe the general consensus was that the aluminum stocks were OK for "conversion" to postban models because they could be welded.  This letter does not tell us anything regarding the legallity of pinning (blind or otherwise) open a stock.  I believe the real question was in regards to the plastic stocks, which you could obviously not weld and would blind pinning and/or epoxy be enough to consider them permanently fixed.   It would probably have been better to inquire about "permanently fixed" vs. "welded", and ask for approved methods of "permanently fixing" an ar-15 collapsable stock...
