Please don't any of the scratch golfers laugh but I shot an 80 on Friday. It was on my local "feel good" course. It has only one par 5 but 3 par 3's of which 2 are about 200 yards and one tricky over water shot. It's only nine holes total so we play it twice for 18. It's not a long course but you have to put it in the hole like anywhere else. I had 7 pars and a birdie and my worst was a six. It felt great.
On a tough course ( I played at one a few weeks back that has hosted a few pro tournaments) I can usually break a hundred but haven't broke 85 on my best day.
Before any nay-sayers ask how many mulligans I took the answer is none. I had a real problem a few years back with some golf "buddies" of mine taking free drops everywhere and then crowing about how they kicked my ass. The next time out I said "you didn't beat me because you were DQ'd for all the free shit you did". It was funny how much things evened up after that!! It's strictly play it as it lies. Amazing how much it helps to pick up you game. It's also cool how years of estimating ranges from shooting comes in handy on the course. I'm usually within 10 or 15 of what the GPS says.
Anyway I was kind of proud of that score and just wanted to share (and brag!) a little. Have a great weekend all!

ETA this is a walking only course which makes a difference on the last few holes

Hole in one on first hole.  As it wasn't going to get better than that I went to the clubhouse to compete the round.

Congrats on the 80.

Better than I ever got.  Congrats.  I am happy if I break 100.

Good job!

Personal best score?  That would be a 68 for me, but it was on a short executive type course.  My best round came from one of the courses I play regularly, 72 from the back tees.  Last Thursday I had a 73 from the same course with 3 birdies and an eagle, but I still managed to 3 putt 5 holes and seriously botched an easy par 5.

The keys to good rounds are keeping the ball in play (which I suck at) and being a good putter and chipper.  Most people can't  hit the ball like Tiger or John Daly, but with lots of practice around the putting green you can gain an edge when you reach the greenside.

I hit the ball a long way and when I am dialed in I can go low, but if I start getting wild with the driver, then I have problems.  That is when the demons show up.

I wish I had your game VTHokie. I never play from the tips although sometimes I'll man up and play from the next to back tee's. I'm always happy to break 90 on the bigger courses. Although I flash some brilliance on occasion (esp. around the greens...I had about 6 chip in's last year and already 1 this year!) consistency is my weak point. I'll shoot 85 one day and 105 the next. I'm working on it though!!

Best round ever?  +2 after 16 and had to quit because it got too dark to finish the last two.

Blake, That would have killed me. I keep one of those clear balls that take a mini light stick for just such an occasion. I'm hitting one of the local "big time" courses tommorrow. I'll post my score if it doesn't hurt to much.!

If you are in the mid to upper 80's, stay off the back tee's. You will not have a fun round.  The key is to keep playing even when you get down.  Remember what works and forget what doesn't.  Also, don't be a sucker and spend gobs of money on equipment.  Have some quality irons, wedges, putter and woods, buy them used off of ebay.  Once you have them, hold onto them.  If Tiger woods can shoot 62 with them, then there isn't going to be any equipment that will get you any closer, only a whole lot more poorer.

Keep your driver in the short grass.

Be able to get up and down from 50 yards and in.

Practice religiously with the flatstick.

Went to to a "Big Time" course near my house. My neighbor wanted to play from the tips and I went ahead with it. Well, I was still hot from last week and although the front side was a little rough I managed to come in in 39 and shoot an 85 for the round. The back side had a birdie and 5 pars. If I play this well the rest of the summer I may break 80 by my birthday in August. Thanks for the responses.

Good job!  Take a look at the course rating.  Through your handicap index, you may have broke 80 on the course if you had played from the whites.  Keep up with it!  What is also important is keeping good thought processes.  If the hole is tight as hell and say 350 yards long.  Keep the big stick in the bag and hit something that will keep you in play and get to about 200 yards.  The same goes for par 5's.  Golf is more of a chess match.  Unfortunately, when I am on the course I play it like checkers.

VTHokie, I sometimes play the "course management" game depending on what I've been doing in the first few holes. If the big stick is taking those unscheduled right turns then it's time to start thinkng alot. If it's going arrow straight (as it has been lately) I tend to just go for it regardless. The final par 5 my last round was a driver/7 iron/2 put birdie. You couldn't wipe the smile off my face. It's a challenge to decide between golf or shooting somedays!!I never thought it would be cheaper to shoot than golf but it is. I also recently purchased last years model Cleveland Hi-Bore. Only paid 150 for it and it hit's the ball a ton.

39 (maybe 37, can't remember) through 9 holes.  It was getting dark when we turned the corner.  I shanked my drive on #10 and called it a day.

Other than that, my best score's an 88.  I'm a lousy golfer, but I can flirt with the beer girl with the best of 'em.

Well yesterday afternoon I shot a 70 from the back tees at my country club.  This is what my round looked like: Birdie, par, bogey (3 putt), birdie, par, birdie, double bogey, par, par, par (3 putt par) par, par, eagle, birdie, bogey, par, bogey, birdie.

I hit par my last outing. I believe it was on the 14th or 15th hole (a par 4 I believe). Oh, the rest of the holes? Forget about it . . . I don't keep score. Too depressing.

Keep your driver in the short grass. . . . .

Hell, I keep my driver in the garage. This decision alone probably save 10 strokes off my game.
