I got a call yesterday from St. Jude medical saying they want to talk with me about a position there. I have a phone interview set for friday. Any of you guys have one of these before? Anything in particular I should know/look out for? |

The phone interview may be a first-step weeding-out deal. The person who calls you may be some generic HR slob with no real knowledge of the position. The person may only be tasked with gathering certain information that was not provided on your resume and/or application. On the other hand, it could be the department calling for an in-depth interview. If that's the case. make sure you have all the pertinent information (transcripts, references, etc.) at hand in advance. Be sure to get names and titles of everyone who is on the other side. Have two or three good questions ready for them (example topics: benefits, work schedules, training opportunities, to whom you might report). Make sure the dog/cat/alligator/children/elephant has been fed, watered and is out of your hair. Make sure your phone batteries are charged. If you have call waiting, disable it during the call. Good luck. |

There are 2 phases to the interview process. The first phase is to weed out all the looney toons who applied for the job. A telephone interview fits into this category. The second phase is to select from a very short list of candidates and to justify hiring you to the HR department. This is done in a face-to-face interview process. The best advice is to not step on your dick during the interview. To do so will get your resume thrown in the trash. |
Sounds like good advice, going to go study the company and get my stuff in order. |
