I'm using different editing programs to see which is user friendly.  For right now I have been using Nikons PictureProject, Arcsoft PhotoImpression, Corel Photo Album 6, Nero PhotoShow Express 4, and Photoshop 6.  I have read that there are others such as "Gimp".  Can someone send me link to it?  If there are others that you would recommend please do.

For things like resizing, croping, and batch operations like conversions and renaming I like Irfanview. It's free and does a lot more than that like getting images from scanners, and it even has a few small filters for touchups, sharpening, and lighting.

Also I've messed a bit with a program called Paint.NET. I works a lot like Photoshop. Not as powerful but good enough for most of us and I think it's easier to use than GIMP.

Here's GIMP

I'd say it really depends on your level and what type of power you want/need. If you just want to get rid of little Timmy's red eye, crop, etc. than there are plenty of very simple and either free or inexpensive tools available. If you are serious and want to do some hardcore work, you'll really want something like Photoshop.

Use Picasa for most simple things.  It is free, easy and powerful enough for most low tech post processing.

If you need more power than that, you will probably have to spend some money and/or learn a more intensive program.
