So whenever I try to add text the entire canvas gets a red tint to it.

I'm unable to duplicate your problem.

Try creating a blank document, select the text tool, and add text. Add another layer and repeat.

What happens?

Are you in quick mask mode?

If you have quick mask turned on and start a text layer, you'll get that red tint.

Check at the bottom of your toolbar for quick mask off/on.

ETA: Not paying attention to what I typed.
