So, I was on my way home from Tennessee and got pulled over on the way out of my ex-wife's little town...51 in a 35. I was going downhill (no excuse, just a factor) and did not really notice how fast I was going. I pulled into a dealership, off the main road, and I got the usual questions. Fortunately, he did not cite me. (If you pulled over a white Intrepid with dual pipes in McMinnville last weekend, thanks!) Probably 'cause I told him I was on my way back to Ft. Bragg.
Anyway, I noticed that he had a pin above the name tag of his uniform in the shape of a pistol. I could not tell what type or if anything else was engraved on it, and I neglected to ask him about it. Anyone know what it was for? |

I would say either he is an instructor or he has attained a certain level of marksmanship with his handgun. Most likely. We used to have a couple of guys at my old PD that wore the little black plastic Glock pins (shaped like a G17) just because they had them. |

Or could be a dept armorer. No real standards for police insignia at all. So...you can put anything you want on your uniforms? Subject to the department's uniform manual. One of the neighboring agencies here has a rectangular pistol marksmanship badge that looks kind of like the EIB from a distance. We don't...I pitched the idea for those who shoot 90% or higher, but the brass didn't want to hurt the feelings of the non-shooters.

Lots of times, you'll see the standard for Police Chief rank is the Eagle, like a colonel. Often, especially in areas where police and sheriff's offices don't get along, is for the sheriff to have general's stars (even 5 star ) in order to show that they 'outrank' a police chief.
Stupid. In VA, the standard is last name and badge. This is set by Department of Criminal Justice Services. Anything beyond that is up to the individual department. |

Our PD allows veterans to wear a branch of service pin above their nametag. Quite a few EGA's on the street. They also have the SEAL SWAT pin for the Tac unit guys and a few others they can wear, including service awards and commendations.
On the fire side we're authorized badge, rank on collars (above FF) and nametag with "serving since" backer. No additional qualification or commendations are acknowledged or authorized. |
