I tell my wife it's an adult pacifier.

Sitting out on the porch swing puffing at it is pretty darned relaxing.

I have one as well but enjoy cigars more.  I suck at packing my pipe.

I tried it a couple years ago but it just seemed like a lot of work.  I did like it because you could smoke it in the house and it had a pleasant smell, more like potpourri than cigarette smoke.

I used to smoke a pipe when I had a lawn that was big enough to mow with a lawn tractor. Very enjoyable. That's been a lot of years ago, and I've been a cigar smoker ever since. I think about breaking out the pipe now and again, but haven't acted on it.

I really enjoyed pipe smoking when I was younger:  a fantastic variety of tobaccos in the local shops at dirt-cheap prices.   A single $12 bag of tobacco would last a month or more for me then.

However, the pipe carries a stigma to it that suggests only old men should smoke them (in public).   Cigars are equally as enjoyable for me, but I smoke cigars primarily due to the differences in appearances and being more socially acceptable for a 30yr old to do in public venues (family gatherings, cookouts, the wife tolerating it, etc).  They are more expensive, but I smoke slightly less and perhaps enjoy each moreso because of it.

I do, but haven't in quite a while.  I can't seem to find my walkin' around pipe, though.

I've owned a few Savinellis.

I smoke a pipe regularly.  I enjoy the occasional cigar but I usually can't justify sitting around smoking for the hour+ that it will take to finish one.  I mostly smoke Virginia Perique blends.

I've always wanted to try it.  My father smoked one back in the day and he seemed to enjoy it.  Smelled great- I remember he smoked some kind of common tobacco with a ship on it.

I do like the flavor of a good cigar, but a pipe smells so good and I could probably use it more often since I want to be idle for 30-45 minutes to enjoy a cigar properly.

I took it up last year, but only smoke it a few times a year, when the weather is nice.

I may try to get my dad's old pipes and pick up a pouch of Carter Hall just for the heck of it.

I had a room mate that picked up smoking a pipe. His was glass and had steel wool in it, though.

I prefer cigars to a pipe. I smoke cigs too.

I used to smoke a pipe all the time when I lived close to a tobacco shop and could get their blend.  Now not so much but I may start again and mail order it.

Okay, I wandered into this thread and now I am sold.

I was a very light smoker and have noticed I have gotten a lot heavier than I wanted to be. I realized the other night that cravings have nothing to do with it. It is the habit. This could very easily help with that.

SO, what do I need to get started??

Pipe? Matches?Tobacco? Anything else? Preferred strategies for smoking? Selection? Preparation? Smoking strategies?

C'mon people! Need the info!

My pipe is a hobby, not a habit.

Part of the experience is packing it.  When I get almost the entire thing to burn off one light

It took a while to find a method that worked for me.

I've smoked pipes for years.  I was into cigars for a while but I got tired of them.  The expense added up, too.  Pipe tobacco has a wide range of flavors, but with cigars, there's only variations on a theme.   These days I tend to stick with some sort of matured Virginia flake.

Savinellis are a good pipe that's not too expensive.  I've never had one that wasn't a good smoker.

Occasionally. When I want some nicotine I usually fire up a cigar. I'm lazy.
