The spousal unit and myself were sitting on the couch the other day after I had finished one of my cigars outside. She stated that she was getting used to the smell of cigars but loooooooooooves the smell of good pipe smoke.

That's all she had to say, she just opened the gates for me to expand my tobacco horizons.

From what I do know about pipes, I tend to like the aromatic tabaccos that have a nice smell to them. But what is a good pipe to go to? Do the different sizes and shapes change the flavor profiles or is it a aesthetic thing?

I have seen a couple that I like and the ones i tend to go towards, I call the "hobbit" pipes. Long stems (I dont know what they area called) and smaller bowls.

anyways, can anyone point me in the right direction on where to get started? And what are some good areomatic pipe blends?  Also, does pipe tabacco have to be humidified like cigars?

Short answers:

"hobbit" pipes are called Churwarden's

The size of the "chamber"(as well as chamber shape) can have different effects on flavors and how a pipes smokes relative to how it is packed as well.

Most seem to like larger chambers for the latakia(tobacco type) blends.  Personally I think it is more subjective to how you pack the tobacco and the type of tobacco.

There are tons of different blends and styles and playing with how you pack or pre smoking ritual can all have an effect on the smoking properties.

If you want to start with the Aro's that's cool, as most of us did the same thing.  But if you are a cigar a day smoker, you might be fine trying some non-aro's also.  I tend to like them much more.

Just about everyone will say pick up a Cob pipe(Missouri Meerschaum brand).  They are cheap as hell and have a decent learning curve.  Also seem to smoke Aro's very well.

As for a specific tobacco recommendation, That's a tough call as we each have a different and changing pallet.  My favorite Aro's, even though I don't consider them in the same category(maybe a crossover Aro perhaps); would be 4Noggins Bald headed teacher(to me a very old school smelling smoke) and Just for Him Shortcut to Mushrooms(part of their Middle Earth tobacco series(has a great earthy, in fact Mushroomy side and a good room note).

Don't expect to get your daily dose of Nicotine with Aro tobacco either.

Relax.

I am sending you a MM or cob pipe.
It's a great starter.

Don't get a Mir yet.
There is a learning curve there.
I was gifted a wonderful Peterson and it has been my good friend.

Of course I bought a few more...

And I can't forget the fire mission that was called in on that one either.
I have plenty to pay forward.

Besides, if you have learned nothing yet, I am an "all in" kind of guy.
When I get into something, I tend to over do it.....

It is a flaw but I have learned just to ride it and let it flow.....

gottcha!

So what do you mean by "learning curve" when it comes to a pipe?  And it was a clay pipe that I was thinking of earlier. but from what I hear most pipe smokers tend to have more than one pipe.

Well with each type of pipe there is maintenance.  Not to mention each pipe will smoke different.  Take a clay for example... They, by nature smoke very hot to the touch.  This can be a problem for new piper's, being that you have not yet learned how to draw.  All pipes radiate/dissipate heat differently.

Cob's are easier to maintain(almost none) and have very good heat dissipation.  They also have a very open draft, which will teach you to slow your draw.  This keeps you from over cooking the tobacco.

There is a ton of video's on youtube that cover everything from maintenance, packing and lighting.

What I learned....the hard way....was that you should start with a briar or cob.
They are very forgiving.

I like the briars.
If the bowl is getting too hot to hold, you are smoking too fast.

Clay pipes are an art to smoke and really are for later.
Mirs....there are good ones and better ones but again, for later.

You need to have fun first.

ETA....he beat me to it..,,

What about the different tobbaco's?  Do they need to be humidified or are they a dry tobbaco?

sorry for all the questions but one more.

Do you use certain pipes for certain tobacco's?  Or is it ok to use an aeromatic in the same one you use and english blend?

Lots of information on Youtube.  Pipe 101 type stuff.  Comes in very handy, especially the packing tutorials.

My two cents.

Stay away from the tobacco in jars.   Smells great, smoke smells great.... can taste just like a cheap cigarette.  And it never dries out.

Tounge Bite is generally a combination of things, but primarily steam burns.  Moist tobacco is a partial culprit and combustion is another.   Smoke SLOWLY and it helps enormously to dry your tobacco before you smoke it .  Only dry what you need to use to pack your pipe.

Swab the stem to the bottom of the bowl if you get gurgles from accumulated moisture with a pipe cleaner, while smoking.

www.puff.com has a pipe forum, very good source of information.

www.tobaccoreviews.com  go there if you are willing to get into the hobby.

I always did it wrong, I could never get past the tongue bite and burns. Learn something every day.

So the tobacco should be dry to avoid this as well as slow draw?

Glad I am catching all of this stuff now.  I probably would have sat there and burned the shit out of myself, never got a solid light and basically had a bad experience. Glad I found this place.

Dry - ish.  Not moist but not crunchy.   But certainly not right out of the tin. Anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes on the counter should do it.  You'll get the hang of it.

Pipesandcigars has great aromatic blends.  As does pipeworks and wilke.
