I have a Philips 42" plasma TV. I have had it over five years, so it is long out of warranty.

The past few months a red rectangle of color has been appearing from the top of the screen to about the middle. It's not there constantly, but it's there most of the time. Needless to say it's very distracting:

You get the idea. It happens whether I'm watching cable or a dvd.

I called the local Philips service center. They want to charge me US$100 just to send someone out to my house and a minimum charge of US$200 for any repair.

Before I allow them to take me to the cleaners on a repair, which might end up costing more than a new LCD tv, has anyone here seen this type of problem before? Is it fixable short of a new screen or some other really expensive fix? Should I just write this off and buy a new one? Other than this problem it works fine

Buying a new TV is probably not going to a whole lot more than getting that one fixed and if you get it fixed you still have a five year old TV that is out of warranty.

You can get a new 1080p 50 inch Panasonic plasma that will look better than your current TV for $1000 or less... a 42 inch in the $700 range maybe less.
