Cool vid. I actually thought it was the one where they play a song by varying the revs.

If you ever get a chance to hear 20 of those do a standing start, don't pass it up.

bummer, I thought you were talking about a real engine

Don't those things idle at 4,000 rpm or thereabouts?  I thought I had read that somewhere.  That's amazing how fast it responds to the throttle inputs.

How the hell would you keep something that hot lubricated?  That was very impressive.

There are reasons it costs $200+ Million a season to field a Formula 1 car.

I've read that they idle around 4000 to 6000 RPM, with the V10 engines of a few years ago hitting full song at 20,000 RPM.  Simply sick.

That was great. Anyone know the stats on F1 engines - how much peak hp and torque and at what rpm etc?

Yikes!  Does it even have a flywheel? It revs so quick that it sounds faster than a chainsaw for rpm increase speed.

F1 engines produce about 300HP/liter. The current engines are 2.4 liters normally aspirated V8's, and make about 750 +/- HP. They rev to 19,000-20,000 RPM. They do not use valve springs, but depend on compressed air to do the task valve springs do in other engines. They are the pinnacle of current internal combustion technology.

I used to have that video and I lost it.  Been looking for it for a while.  Thanks.

Don't know if it's true, but I read somewhere that even the pneumatic actuation
was getting too slow, and they were experimenting with electro-magnetic
actuation of the valves.

Current FIA rules have locked in the current engine technology for at least this season and next.

Interesting thread.
I just watched the Australian GP after a 4 year hiatus. The Michael Schumacher dominance was getting a little old. It was nice to see some fresh faces.
Including an American, named 'Speed' no less. Gee, he wasn't destined to race or anything?

F1 has always been a sport of pushing the technical envelope. and I hope they continue to do so.

The speed at which that thing wraps up the rpms just amazes me. The way it goes from idle to red line and back is very impressive. I'd love to have something that revs like that in a street car.

Told a gf that when she asked me about why I liked racing and watching racing.
Her and her mom didnt get it.Looked at her dad and he gave me that "I know what you mean," look.
