I took a 98 Mauser to a gunsmith and asked him to put in a timney trigger I puchased.  He said he could do it, that the trigger was the correct one and verbally quoted my $75 for the fitting and possibly a little more for any stock work that needed to be done.  I knew we was going to have to do some stock work so I was expecting the price to be higher anyways.

I got a call from him that my riffle was done and that the cost was over $190.  I asked him why and he said the trigger I purchased wasn't working no matter what he did.  He then told me he found a trigger he had laying around his shop and tried that trigger and it worked.  So he is now charging me for 2 hours of labor to troubleshoot my trigger (or something around those lines) and $50 for a 6 year old trigger.

CAN HE REALLY DO THAT?

Did he contact you when he "discovered" that your trigger didn't work and ask for approval or a go ahead?

If not, I'd tell him he had no authorization to do work other than what you wanted.

No, the first time I heard about it was when he called me and told me it was $190.  I gave no authorization for him to do anything beyond put my trigger in.

You are not obligated to pay for work not authorized. Helps if you filled out some kind of work order.

If he refuses to return your parts until you pay him what he is charging, contact a lawyer and have the lawyer contact him on your behalf and threaten him with a law suit. The lawyer can tell him all the statutes he is violationg.

Chances are his gunsmithing skills are on par with his business ethics skills.  I'd avoid him in the future.  Chances are, also, that there was nothing wrong with the Timney trigger before he "worked" on it.

Ha, yeah, the conundrum. Pay a lawyer $150 to threaten this guy on a $190 bill.

He is definitely wrong for doing that to you, but will probably refuse to return your rifle until you pay him. If you're digging your heels in I see small claims court in your future.
