Say what you want about Spain (and there is plenty to say) they conquered a fuck ton of territory "further beyond" what people felt was the known world. It's a play on "Non Plus Ultra" (no further beyond) injunction on the pillars of Hercules. The military exploits of the Conquistadores (especially Hernan Cortez) is worthy of reading. |
