| Our department will be testing for police sgt. in the first part of 2012. I have done my best to stay current on everything important to my current job, but it has been over 20 years since I have taken any type of standardized test or have been interviewed. Does anyone have any experience with some of the paid police promotional testing help sites (policecareer.com, etc). Are they worth the money? Did they help. Any other advice? |

Its hard to have a paid company tell you how to study for non-standardized testing. I've been promoted twice, and didnt use any paid service for promotional study. I'm not sure these companies would help much unless your from a really large agency that would provide a profit for the time involved in preparing study material for a known test, unless your agency also has a private company prepare their test.
If you cant find what your looking for from a vendor, check your agencies posting for the promotion testing as it may at least give you an idea of what subject areas are on the test. For example our posting describe the duties of a sergeant. Supervisors obviously have to have an advanced understanding of a laws and legal guide lines, but also include employee discipline, critical incident response, workplace harrassment, citizen complaint procedures and etc. We do a two part test, written with a minimum passing score and then an oral board for those who make the cut. I ended up doing well the first time I tested, but did great the second time I tested as I was able to hone in on studying the material for the test once I was familiar with the test. Best of luck. |
