In regards to the "Refugee" thread, I remember when I was in the Navy on the submarine. I was one of the "Nukes". We refered to the non-Nukes and "Coners" 'cause they worked in the "Cone". I had no problem with being called a Nuke, but I was often heard to say, "FUCKING CONERS!" when they pissed me off. In the effort to reduce disharmony and ill-will between the essentially two crews, the Engineer decreed that they will henceforth be known as "Forward Trained Personel". I thought that was all bullshit, and told him so. I told him that changing the words and adding many syllables, did not change the meaning or the resentment, but only served to make it more difficult to use an angry tone. When he was around, it became "FUCKING FORWARD TRAINED PERSONEL!!". This is much the make as calling people "Undocumented Workers" intead of the illegal aliens that they are. In the spirit of George Carlin, who has spoken of euphemisms, I would like to compile a list of politically correct euphemisms for common terms. This is intended to be humorous as well as educational. Time starts..... Now. |
Late 80's, I worked for a gov agency that decided that "senior citizen" was too harsh. They began using the term "chronologically gifted". They used this in all communications, rewrote documents, etc. for about a year until they finally figured out nobody knew what the hell they were talking about. Then they changed it al back to "senior citizen".

Oh yeah! I stopped off at a "community living center" south of Fairbanks to refill my water jug and was rudely told to get it outside. I did, and the couple guys in charge of pouring a concrete sidewalk were looking at me funny. Finally, a 20 year old girl asked me if I knew what this place was. Well, yeah, a communtiy center. She laughed, and said it was a jail! |
