I have came to the conclusion after this last election and my family current stand on gun control I am done. I know some will say what the hell and that I am the one with major fail.
Parents are in their early 70's and health is declining, but I just can't take the conflict and anger that happens every time talking with or visiting. Younger brother calls today which is rare as hens teeth to scold me for taking my nephew(sisters son) to the carpet for his disrespect and his brainwashed view on gun control. I am ready to count my parents and siblings out of my life. I have tried to change their views ie; automatic weapons shouldn't be able to be bought by civilians, hi capacity mags. The whole dumbass "Well then you should be able to have shoulder fired rockets and nukes" crap, of course you can probably tell how they voted and how I voted. Any advice, fire away- my give a fuck is broke! |

I'd be proud to call ya my brother. It happens in every family - try to avoid politics, but it gets hard to do sometimes. There are a lot of things we agree on, the gun issue is one thankfully, and I'd say about 75% of the rest of the crap Gov't throws our way. But sooner than later we all come to the realization that we're all gonna have to pick a side - as painful as it may be. |
Most of my family are red supporters so not really a whole lot of anti-american bullshit. However, my gf's family has a few hardcore libetards. It's best that I don't say anything around them because it doesn't stop. Talking about gun control specifically and me showing them my SBR AR, they told my gf she should leave me before I end up like every other shooter this year

While the polarization of the US continues to grow more and more bitter sometimes you have to be careful. My Dad was a lib and voted for Obama once. He didn't get a second chance though because he died two months before the last election. If your parents are in their 70's it might be worth considering stopping talking about gun stuff with them. Neither you nor they are going to change. Soon the situation will resolve itself when they cross the river. It will probably mean more to you later if you choose diplomacy in their case.
As far as other family members IDK. People change over time and it is seldom good to sho nuff write off family unless they are junkies or something very serious. My Dad and I learned to not talk politics. It was OK. In the 1860's here in the US family members chose opposite sides and there are many documented instances of family members facing each other on the battlefield. Each man must choose. We are not there yet. As the statists continue in their quest to disarm all of us before they go so far that people will rise up take heart in the fact that they have utterly lost. There are so many military guns and so much ammo in people's hands right now that it would take 100 years to make a dent in the supply. STG 44's are still popping out of peoples closets in 2012 as we witnessed last week at a gun buy back. As long as they agree not to broach the subject of guns/politics with you and keep their word you can probably be OK with your parents. You won't have to do it long. The fire of freedom still burns hot in half of the US population. Don't let your fire burn your house down though. |

You have your view. They have theirs. Don't worry about it. There's plenty of reason to worry about it. They probably vote. OP, sometimes it takes baby steps to get people to figure things out. When China today said the US needs to get started on gun control, it's worth it to mention Tiennamen Square and the Chinese government's control of their people. Gun control isn't about guns, it's about control. Leftists want to control everybody, and everybody wants to keep guns out of the hands of the dangerously mentally ill (though considering Ft Hood was done by a shrink, it's worth having a debate over who the doctors are and how they decide that, too). You can start by learning and teaching others about theBattle of Athens - especially when they do the "you can't fight government" thing. Also explain to them that progressive ideas like pistol purchase permits came from the segregated South (you could throw in democrats there, but that might set them off) where sheriffs could then just deny guns to black people and guarantee them for their white thug friends. I studied under Russian professors at college, and due to that, I became a pretty strong 2A supporter well before I owned any guns. Having heard direct personal stories from people who lived under regimes where the government had control was rather enlightening. You might also want to tell them about the JPFO... and when they say nothing like that can happen here, you can reference Heart Mountain. |

Some people will say, "they're your family, you have to stick with them." I can tell you from experience that it's not true. You can love someone, and forgive them, and appreciate the good things they did for you, but still decide that they're too toxic to be a part of your life. |

You know if it was only gun control I MIGHT be able to just blow it off, but we are talking die hard Socialist Democrat views on EVERYTHING. My parents have been their for me and I appreciate that so this decision is not made lightly.
In the same note my brother moved 6 hours away and feels " it wouldn't hurt me to go over there(parents) more" . I guess he is not taking into account how I came back from the military and have spent the last 26 years doing and being with them. The brother is a lawful everyday gun carrying Tennessean who believes no one should own full auto, but he is against an out right total ban-WTF Belives anyone who signed a Secession Petition is an enemy of the state and needs shot, parents are the same way.
How in the hell did I escape from the crazy tree. . Did I mention I am only 5 miles down the road from parents. |
| i guess i should start counting my blessings. my parents are both pro-gun, my mil gave me a gun for my b-day this year. my fil is fairly conservative, but due to divorce, wife doesn't talk to him anymore. other than the in-laws disliking me for personal reasons(we've always managed to be civil towards each other), there have not been any blow ups. |

While not a pleasant situation, I don't fault you, OP.
I am fortunate that all of my close relatives share the beliefs I hold (mainly because I take after them). I only know of one relative family that are Obama voters and likely anti-gun. They are the son, daughter, and ex wife of my Mother's Brother who abandoned them for some chick, and along with my Mother's Sister, left my Mother (the youngest child) to take care of both of their parents (my Grandparents) as they died of cancer, as well as plan their funerals. I am lucky to have not had any contact with that side of the family in over a decade. I couldn't imagine how hostile it would be if we ended up having dinner. They actually ended up finding me and my two siblings on Facebook and contacted us last year. Then, after seeing a post I made about Obama, the son (my cousin) went crazy on me.......he also dropped out of high school, got a GED, and has no job. Getting over a petty fight for the sake of being family is one thing, but being totally different people and not subjecting yourself to constant dysfunction is part of self preservation (not killing yourself with stress). |

I just don't socialize with people who aren't of the same basic opinions as me. I don't personally know anyone who voted for Obama or who thinks gun control is a good idea. i can't even grasp the idea of why anyone would knowingly associate with people who aren't of the same basic ideals. I have one in-law who thinks guns are just evil and jump up and kill people on their own. i haven't spoken to her since I heard that stupid shit come out of her mouth. I told my wife that I won't be around the stupid cunt again, she understood even though she didn't like me calling her sister a cunt. I married a Mormon girl, and her whole family stocks up on food and other stuff. none of them own any guns. after we got married, some of her family members told me when SHTF that they'll be coming to my house, since I'm pretty well stocked with guns and ammo. I politely told them they would be shot since it's not my problem to take care of them, as they would just be more problem than they're worth to keep around. my wife was a little upset, but she understood what I was getting at. we all talked more about it and now a couple of them will be getting their own weapons. the others that don't want to man up and get their own guns to protect their families..........fuck 'em. |
