My wife and I are finally gonna put in a pool.  We need some relief from the heat here in Cent Fl and the kids are getting big enough to finally enjoy the water.  I was hoping to get some good tips from the Arfcom crew on what to get and what to avoid.  Right now we are thinking about an in ground gunite pool (30'x 18' kidney shaped) with diamond bright coating, salt filtration system, and dual thermostat heat pump (for the added jacuzzi).  My wife wants to have pavers around the pool (added $6000 upgrade), I am fine with the regular acrylic.  We will also prob have it screened in.  So far the rough estimate for the above is $45 -50 K.  Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanced!!!

OK, I'm only gonna say this once. Your contracter will probably have a 90 day completion clause. Ask them if they will need more time. If they do, have them change the clause. Then, whatever they go over, write down (and both of you sign) that they will pay you $100 per day if they exceed the time limit. If they balk, find another contracter. Every single person I know that did that, got a pool finished on time OR a fantastic upgrade (their choice) or a refund that was well worth it. Everyone that didn't ... was very sorry. In SoFla, contractors will assign a backbreaking load of jobs to their foremen. You will be protected with the "$100 clause" and you'll be the only job they give a damn about when crunchtime comes. Trust me. You are NOT telling them when ... they are telling you when. But they'll stick to it. BTW...your pool setup sounds pretty good. The only people I know with the "salt" system love it. Stay safe

Put plenty of deck area around it.  Plan for lot's of chairs, area to eat, lay out, etc...

I've got a filter system that you only clean at the end of the season.  Very convient.

I would think about an ozone system in Florida, else you'll be burning off a lot of chlorine.

Any ideas on screening the pool in...pros or cons.  Its about 10K for the screen enclosure.  The pool will be sorounded by oak trees, but none hanging directly over.  My wife likes the idea to keep out the skeeters.

any other takers out there....

Seems to be the norm in Florida to screen them

Drawback of screening is that it blocks a good percentage of the sun, keeping the water cooler.  A bit less use during the year.

You MUST screen the pool. However, most screens will still not keep out the no-seeums.

Here is my pool:

Wanna go swimmin?

DAMN DUDE!    That's a cesspool

Suggest you buy (6) bottles of liquid chlorine and dump them all in.    That method can rescue some pretty bad water

Move near a lake.  I bought a house recently with a pool.  It's a complete pain in the butt.  The first weekend my wife goes away, I'm filling the damn thing in.

That was the day after TS Alberto took a dump in my pool. The bastard also flooded my downstairs with 6" of salt water.

We drained it and refilled from scratch. It is back to  beautiful.

ETA: The house is almost back to normal now too.
