Had a New Yorker call the LA Carry gun law/rights hotline today. He is moving to LA from NY (for the first time), and he assumed we would have all kinds of convoluted hoops to jump through to bring his firearm(s) with him. He was calling to find out whose permission he would need, etc.
I told him he had to forget everything he learned in NY. I explained down here, you can simply walk into a store, buy a gun, put it on your hip and walk out. You can have it in your car, your home, wherever you want. No permission needed, no receipts, no judges, no "permit to purchase," no registry, no paperwork to transfer, etc. He was stunned. He said, "...WOW." I smiled. "Yep." I explained getting a permit and the hassles of OCing and so on, but that we were nothing like NY. He was amazed. I am glad to live down South. While I am thinking about it, I invited one of my profs to the range. He had a high and tight cut, so I thought he might be mil. Anyway, turns out he is from IL. He asked, "So do you all leave your guns at the range?" I was like "Um, no." That's one of those "You ain't from around here, are you?" moments. LOL I mentioned later that I hoped I hadn't put him off by mentioning the range. He said no, he grew up in Wisconsin, and that things weren't as different as I thought they were up north. I neglected to go into the fact that WI and IL are the ONLY two states that have no legal process by which to carry a concealed weapon. I have been to all these places. I know just how different they are. |
