I'm not Catholic nor do I have any connection to SSPX, I just find them interesting.

Because the traditionalist group consecrated bishops without papal approval, the Vatican issued a decree on July 2 declaring those bishops and their consecrators automatically excommunicated. One day after the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) consecrated four bishops without the permission of Pope Leo XIV, the Vatican issued a decree declaring the excommunication of all bishops involved in the ceremony and stating that the group is in schism.

The SSPX is too Vichy French for me.  The politics of their leaders betray hate within their hearts that is incompatible with following Jesus.  They have been leading people astray using the beauty of the Latin Mass, which was unfortunately marginalized in the Catholic Church after Vatican II.

I feel sorry for those that follow the SSPX.  It's easy to fall victim to a counterfeit church when bad local leaders within your own limit or restrict traditional forms of worship.  Sometimes it feels like some Catholic Bishops are persecuting Catholics to leave and join the SSPX.  Like these Bishops  are secretly working together with the SSPX.

It's somewhat amusing to see my group (Global Anglicans) petition for admission while these guys are leaving.

"Wait, where are you guys going?"

Also, AFAIK, these excommunications are automatic. Meaning, they did it to themselves.

For whatever reason the news about this group popped up for me about a week ago.  Until then, I never heard of them.  They did the same thing back in the late 60's to early 70's and the pope at that time excommunicated them, and then I think it was Francis that lifted the decree and recognized all of the Bishops and clergy again.  I think they went into this with full knowledge that this was going to happen.  Supposedly, 15,000 members showed up in Zurich, Switzerland for the ceremony, which sounds like they're letting the Catholic church know that they will do what they want, consequences be damned.

They seem to me to be less about tradition and more about resisting papal authority in just about anything. They imply they're the only ones holding the legitimate masses and recognize the authority of the seat of Peter, while disregarding the directives from the seat of Peter.

NO bishops limiting TLM seems to be a big thing pushing people to the SSPX, but I think this will help the FSSP.

Not just limiting TLM, but removing sacred art, alter rails, and Communion while kneeling or on the tongue.  The SSPX blames Vatican II, but that is simply not true.  Many people took advantage in advancing their own anti-Catholic agendas while falsely claiming they were following Vatican II.  That's why I see Bishops who even today who push those personal agendas as working for the same dark forces as the SSPX.  There was one Bishop who is renowned for how faithful and nice, absolutely nice he was, but I saw his face turn from angelic smiles and happiness while giving Communion on the hand, turn into the face of a demon from hell when my mother stepped up to receive on the tongue.  He relented, but the demon inside could not hide his anger. The Eucharist was not disrespected. Instead of leaving the Church we prayed for his soul. When he retired he was replaced by a faithful Catholic Bishop.  Many had been praying for that.

I forgot about the alter rail removals. I know some churches are reinstalling them.

It's sad that there's some priests out there that were like that. I guess I've been fortunate I haven't been to a parish that is like that, otherwise I probably wouldn't be converting.

I've read comments online from SSPX laity, and I quote, 'I don't care what Rome has to say.'  Which is a very odd statement for a supposed Catholic to make, lol.

I believe the laity have been warned that if they continue to follow SSPX into their schism are also excommunicated.
7/3/2026 4:07:56 PM EDT
[#11]
They've not been warned. There is guidance on their status based upon their involvement.

"Since imputability requires full knowledge and deliberate consent, examples of established imputability may include:

(1) Lay members of the Third Order of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X;

(2) Lay faithful who habitually participate in SSPX liturgical celebrations while formally sharing its doctrinal positions.

Conversely, the following are not ordinarily to be considered imputable:

(3) Lay faithful who attended the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X solely for liturgical or spiritual reasons;

(4) Lay faithful who, although aware of the tensions with the Holy See, do not reject either the Magisterium or the authority of the Roman Pontiff.

If a lay member of the faithful belonging to the categories described in nos. 1–2 has incurred a canonical penalty and seeks full communion with the Catholic Church, the procedure requires a formal act expressing full adherence to Catholic doctrine and obedience to the Church’s hierarchy under the jurisdiction of the local Ordinary, who is the guarantor of the unity of the particular Church.

Accordingly, such a lay member of the faithful must:

– Present to the local Ordinary the Profession of Faith and the Formula of Adherence, duly dated and signed (see Appendices A and B).

After receiving the required documentation, the local Ordinary shall receive the lay faithful at the time and in the manner he judges most appropriate, making use, for example, of the Rite of Reception into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church of Those Already Validly Baptized, suitably adapted.

With respect to the lay faithful described in nos. 3–4, it is sufficient that they approach a priest who is in full communion with the Church and resolve not to attend the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X in the future."

...

"2. With regard to the lay faithful, those who formally adhere to the Society of Saint Pius X under the conditions established in the Explanatory Note of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts of 1996 (cf. ibid., 7) — still in force, and hereby adopted by this Dicastery — are to be considered schismatics and excommunicated.

3. The holy People of God is hereby informed that the sacred ministers of the Society of Saint Pius X administer the sacraments illicitly, and that the sacrament of penance administered by them and the marriages they assist at are invalid.

The Church, as a devoted mother, will receive with sincere affection and eager care all those who desire to return to full communion. The Apostolic Nuncios will have at their disposal the procedures that Ordinaries may employ in the various cases.

Finally, all the faithful are exhorted to remain firm in communion with the Roman Pontiff, with the bishops in communion with him, and with the whole Church (cf. Lumen Gentium, 22; can. 751 CIC), and to refrain from participating in the celebrations and activities promoted by the aforementioned Society of Saint Pius X."

They have in fact been warned not to follow SSPX into schism and now have full culpability if they do so.

I've read comments from a few that they will not be attending anything to do with SSPX in the future and thus remain in communion with the Church.

Man's religious tradition(s) can and do change.

Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever.

Jesus Christ is the sole head of the Church with supreme, unrivaled authority.

True worshipers are called to submit directly to Him and His Word, which provides a basis for evaluating any human claims to authority in the Church.

1 Corinthians 11:3
"But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God."

Matthew 28:18
"And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.'"

Colossians 1:18
"And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent."

Jesus is not a head but the head, with preeminence (supremacy) in all things.

This perspective does not dismiss the value of godly church leadership or unity, but it anchors everything in submission to Christ.

Hebrews 13:17
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Ephesians 4:1-6
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

John 4:23-24
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” ~ Jesus

I'm following the Chief Shepherd.

Am I correct in understanding that they are banned from partaking in the sacraments and that they just have to make the correct administrative/atonement to be in full communion?

Otherwise, it's no different for them?

FSSP: ”we prefer the TLM”

SSPX: “Those not willing to die for the Mass are not worthy to celebrate the Mass.”

One prefers it.  The other believes in it to the extent that they’d rather be “excommunicated” than to forsake it.

That’s just my take on it.  I certainly don’t speak for the sspx.

Is it all about the mass? I thought the FSSP was the SSPX of old, but they did what was necessary to remain in communion with the catholic church the last time the SSPX defied the seat of Peter.

I have a headache so can't think well or look up much right now, but I think that sounds accurate.  In some cases it is just a matter of atonement/Confession.   Also you can't be a lector or several other functions as well. It was covered in Fr. Mike's The Catechism in a Year very well, but I can't find it at the moment.

You might be able to find the right days here:

This article seems to cover it too:

I think people get confused because there were denominations in the USA that would kick you out permanently for things like drinking, playing the fiddle, or morals violations.  Church meeting logs from the 1800s can be a hoot to read for the list of things, but I guess you agree to it when you join.

On weekends I attend a diocesan TLM or a Byzantine Catholic liturgy.

However, given what I have seen/read from Pope Leo and his number two guy, the head of the Dicastery of Faith and Morals, Cardinal Fernandez (who I believe to be the author of the excommunication) I tend to think said excommunication is a badge of honor for the SSPX.

As I have said over the years since Francis, the RC leadership's agenda appears to be attempting to make Church theology and practice into the image and likeness of mainstream protestantism (Episcopal Church, UCC, ELCA, United Methodist, etc).  To the best of my knowledge, the SSPX justifies its consecrations by seeing the RC Church as being in a state of emergency. I can't disagree with that.

That's also just my take.

Put not your trust in princes, in sons of men, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth, on that very day his plans perish.

I read that the SSPX consecration ceremony followed the standard Bishop consecration formula, down to announcing and reading the commission from the Pope. But... we all know that couldn't have been real.

If true, they've become larpers. Their internal contradictions have led to their becoming larpers.

The Vatican did not follow Cannon law in said excommunication. The SSPX is withholding Church Tradition against the Modernist crisis in the Catholic (and every Christian church)

They laity are not excommunicated and the Sacraments @ the SSPX are valid but illicit (which is debatable as well)

When the Church allows blasphemous priests and Bishops to continue their errors, and then suppresses Church Tradition? It is obviously a crisis. Very much inline with the Arian crisis.

Traditional seminaries and Churches are the only Churches showing growth.

I will continue to go to Traditional mass, to include the SSPX when available.

This article explains what the different rites are.

https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/answers/catholic-rites-churches-24765

It's the same valid Mass and Sacraments in all. The Catholic core is the same with all of them, it just looks a little different on the outside due to language, art, architecture, pews or lack of them, and so on.

Years ago one of my favorite priests retired and then got interested in the Byzantine Rite. The local "Latin" Bishop approved him studying for it as did the Byzantine Eparch, so for years he said Mass at Catholic Byzantine Church. His mother even attended as did former parishioners who would visit.

The N.O. mass and the Latin Mass... are NOT the same. The N.O. removed 80% of the prayers and gave the priest choices to change the Mass at whim.

Vatican II never allowed a new mass. But due to the ambiguity and weak leadership since..... here we are. The N.O. much closer to the Cranmer and Jannsenist mass.

I apologize. I did not understand that is what you were asking. Those are the same.

Yet, due to Traditionis Custodis..... all diocesan TLM will eventually be abrogated.

This is another reason to abrogate the SSPX. Force all the Trads into diosesan TLM, to then remove them.

I will continue to go to Traditional mass, to include the SSPX when available.

Odd to supposedly quote a man that kept fidelity to the Pope and Church and not follow a party into schism, resulting in the loss of his head.

Is that something that is happening with the TLM?

I used to go to a diocese TLM. Then all were abrogated, leaving only the SSPX for me to attend.

I've looked for TLM near me to check it out. I haven't been able to find one in a feasible distance.

I've only known NO. Diocese of Austin is my AO.

I am in the Austin diocese. The Cathedral used to have a very nice one. Large attendance. TC caused the removal. There is still one in Dripping Springs @ 1:30pm. It was heavily attended, but then kicked out by TC but allowed in the auditorium. The pastor is awesome. Vietnamese, one of the "boat people." He has been doing all he can to keep it.

On a side note. During the lockdowns, the SSPX and the Ecclesia Dei clergy, never closed their doors.

There is also a small Trad community in Waco @ the Baylor Catholic center.

If you're in Austin, the SSPX have Confession and a low mass the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month at the Aiden Hotel on I35/Oltorf

Waco is right around the corner from me. The Aiden Hotel mass is too far.

I saw that the SSPX and Ecclesia Dei didn't close during Covid.

Not that an Anglican's opinion is sought after here, but I don't get all the fuss over the different liturgies. If I was with Rome and there was TLM, I'd go to it. And if there was NO, I'd go to that.

Basically, if it's got sacraments, I'm there.

As I have said over the years since Francis, the RC leadership's agenda appears to be attempting to make Church theology and practice into the image and likeness of mainstream protestantism (Episcopal Church, UCC, ELCA, United Methodist, etc).  To the best of my knowledge, the SSPX justifies its consecrations by seeing the RC Church as in a state of emergency. I can't disagree with that.

That's also just my take.

LOL, that's a frightening thought! Raised in the Episcopal Church and then dumped back into it thanks to the Vatican leadership, Synod of Synodality (fer cryin' out loud) and legions of liberal/heterodox clergy...

No issue, brother. I considered returning to Orthodoxy back in 2021 (at the suggestion of my conservative-cradle-Catholic wife) when Francis was really getting to me but after a few weeks of serious consideration decided against it.

I have refrained from participating in this thread because I find the whole thing very sad, embarrassing to the Church, and above my pay-grade to resolve.  However, given the exchange above on the Great Insanity, I think it would be unfair me to remain quiet.  This will most likely be my only post though.

Shortly after our diocese, like all other dioceses, shut the doors of our churches when we needed them most, two of my kids needed to go to confession.  My pastor was making no exceptions.  He had publicly informed our parish that going to the SSPX was a valid option, but I asked him personally to validate.  He confirmed what he had said publicly.  Some of my friends did not take the pastor's word, but called the diocese and spoke with canon lawyers (one of whom was the associate pastor of my parish ) before feeling comfortable to go to the SSPX.  With the explicit approval of my diocesan pastor, I called the nearest SSPX chapel.  They told me that they were open, so I took my kids there, frankly, with great reservation.  I was on guard the whole time, but I did not encounter anything problematic or offensive to pious ears.  When things tightened up even more, the young, unassuming SSPX priest started running 12-hour (quite often longer) confession marathons every Sunday.  He would start at 0800 and take ten people every hour (it may have been a baker's ten occasionally ) without any breaks for lunch of dinner.  I will always remember him with great fondness and it is out of a debt of gratitude toward him and his priestly fraternity for making that possible that I am posting.

Additionally, the whole US arguably owes the SSPX a debt of gratitude.  It was the SSPX with representation from the Thomas More Society that fought and won three key legal battles, including New York (along with a community of Orthodox Jews), New Jersey, and California.

Whether I wish the SSPX is would have handled the episcopal consecrations differently is another topic, but my family and I will always be grateful to the SSPX for keeping their doors open and welcoming us during the Great Insanity.  I hope and pray that they will be granted regular canonical status.  God bless you all.
