For energy, either XLE, an exchange traded fund, or APC Anadarko Petroleum.

APC has a dividend re-investment program that buys stock at a 5% discount to the market price.  It adds up over time.

right now i would be diversified on both fronts... a single position is not a good idea in either of those markets at this point in their respective cycles.

for energy, gas and NG are way down, and if the winter is "light" NG will be down even further.  hurricane season ends in a few weeks and there has been ZERO risk to the gulf infrastructure.

for RE, REITs are probably going to get skinned for a bit longer, so i'd go with a more commercial real estate approach.  again, concentration in RE at this time is not recommended unless you have an iron stomach and are a contrarian to the bitter end.

so...

for RE, i'd pick a concentrated RE fund with little REIT exposure, a lot of commercial, and some international to balance things out -> TAREX.  (*)
for energy, i'd pick a mid-cap fund with a higher than normal concentration in energy but not a pure enerygy play --> FLVCX.  (*)

note: move the slider at the bottom from 200days LEFT out to the max on the right side.

disclosure
(*) i own these and they have treated me very well over the past few years.

Real Estate: VNQ.  Low cost, low turnover, I'm happy with it.

Energy: I recently sold off my XOM and BP stocks.  I will probably buy VDE or IXC to replace them.
