Why does it seem like all the pics of Israeli soldiers show them with M-16s and not the Gallil?

The Israelis decided they like M16s better?

They get the M16s from us for free, or at a really good price which is better than paying for their own factories to make the Gallil.

Do the Israelis still have all those M14s that were given to them during the 1973 War?  John

I doubt they gave them away.  Either sold to make a buck or stockpiled to arm civilians.

Actually this was explained by the Webmaster of the IDF Special Forces webpage (an IDF SF member himself).  They don't care for the Galil - not only is it heavy - but in their experience it was not as reliable as the M16. (this was last year at Assaultweb.com - unfortunetly they don't keep posts as long as they do here - otherwise I'd post the link)

Add that to the fact they can buy M16s with US Aid money, but they can't buy homegrown Galils that way and there is also a strong economic reason for it.  Why do you think they want to produce the Tavor over here?

BTW the Galils are still being used - for reserve troops and those in Armor & Artillery (units where you don't have to worry about luggin all that weight around).

Teh M14s are offered for sale occasionally in SGN. I can't remember what company has them. But they also have various IDF sniper rifles for sale

They've put scopes and bipods on them.  Saw a picture in one of the news magazines.

forest hit it right on the head -
the israelis get aid money - but it's like
a credit card to the company store.  they
get us dollars - but must buy from u.s.
mfg's.

i think they like the m16 most due to it's
lighter weight....

when i was there in 99 - i'd say 98% had
m16s of various types were seen, only a
handful of galils - mostly well used and
being carried by non-infantry.

I wonder why we're seeing more M-16s in the hands of Palestinians? Are they transitioning from the AK?

How about taking them from their enemies?  You need weapons - your enemy has them - you now have a supplier....
