| Why does it seem like all the pics of Israeli soldiers show them with M-16s and not the Gallil? |
|
Actually this was explained by the Webmaster of the IDF Special Forces webpage (an IDF SF member himself). They don't care for the Galil - not only is it heavy - but in their experience it was not as reliable as the M16. (this was last year at Assaultweb.com - unfortunetly they don't keep posts as long as they do here - otherwise I'd post the link) Add that to the fact they can buy M16s with US Aid money, but they can't buy homegrown Galils that way and there is also a strong economic reason for it. Why do you think they want to produce the Tavor over here? BTW the Galils are still being used - for reserve troops and those in Armor & Artillery (units where you don't have to worry about luggin all that weight around). |

forest hit it right on the head - the israelis get aid money - but it's like a credit card to the company store. they get us dollars - but must buy from u.s. mfg's. i think they like the m16 most due to it's lighter weight.... when i was there in 99 - i'd say 98% had m16s of various types were seen, only a handful of galils - mostly well used and being carried by non-infantry. steve |
