If you had the opportunity to move from Wisconsin to:
Virginia South Carolina North Carolina Georgia Florida Alabama Mississippi Where would you relocate to? Finding a job for me wouldn't be an issue as my job would allow me to go to any of the above states although my wife will be looking for a job. |

Finding a job for me wouldn't be an issue as my job would allow me to go to any of the above states although my wife will be looking for a job. Of those, GA, FL, and AL are the only options I'd consider. We're in MS now, from TN, and can't wait to get back to TN. MS has its good points but I just prefer TN. Georgia has a lot going for it. NC and SC have some really quirky gun laws. |
If I understand correctly, GA has already received its limit of yankees for the year. try FL
Northern GA might be a good fit for you. although it does get hot still, there tends to be four seasons, unlike a little further south. And the gun laws are extremely nice and seem to be getting nicer each year |

Virginia is a good state for the most part. But northern Virginia is a different animal than where I live.
Florida has some weather issues, but I enjoyed my time right on the coast of Georgia and Florida. I have always liked NC but much of it is highly regulated and can have high taxes. Depending of course on where you live. |

South Carolina sucks.
Pros: Waffle House Class 3 weapons are allowed CWP Castle Doctrine Gas at $3.50 per gallon Golf Mecca Cons: Waffle House CWP can't carry into state or federal properties or establishments that serve alcohol for on premises consumption (restaurants) Gas at $3.50 per gallon Vehicle property tax Stupid people Snow birds Dialing the 1+ area code to make a call to my fiancee's cell phone from my home phone... but not having to dial the 1+ area code when calling other places. Stupid. I've been here since 1992. Not looking to move any time soon but if I do, it'll be Ga, Ky, Tn, or maybe Nc. Ok, someone mentioned the seasons... we've got 2 here... Summer and Not Summer... Summer it gets to 100+ for several days per year... prior to that, we've got weather that's Spring like for about a month or so it seems like... prior to that, it was Winter time... temps in the teens overnight at times when the Canadians can't keep their airmass to themselves ... fall weather is kind of nice but it doesn't last too long.
We normally have an ice storm towards the end of Feb but it didn't happen this year. Thank you Punxsutawney Phil!!! Or is that Mother Nature? I forget.
SC isn't that bad really. Land isn't too expensive down here, the cost of living isn't too high, we've got indoor plumbing and high speed internet (in most areas) unless you're within 1 mile of my house then you don't get it like me and have to have DSL. |

Why the Southeast? It would be the second to last region(Hawaii tops that) I'd ever consider moving to. But of all those, FL even though overall it's overdeveloped for my taste. I've lived there before. Plenty of good states out West to consider. Southeast because that's the region that is currently open. |

FL has no state taxes I assume you're referring to income tax? They have to have some taxes. That is correct... no state income tax! States with no state income tax always get it back elsewhere, though....you need to look at sales tax, look at how aggressive they are in collecting taxes that income-tax-states don't collect, how do they tax corporate profits, etc? |
|
NC has some unusual handgun laws... We in VA are the proud owner of 1 remaining gun law (not talking about CHP Regs) since '1 handgun a month' was just eliminated. Revolving cylinder shotguns were banned here long before they became DDs. Even if you wanted one and were willing to pay the $200 to get it, it would be a no-go here... VA also has state pre-emption and range protection laws in force. Effectively, no locality can enact gun laws and ranges only have to meet the noise and zoning laws as of the date they were created. Since you're WI, this won't matter much, but VA is technically considered a cold weather state, albeit on the border. The climate is quite varied. VA Beach is only a few hundred miles away from Winchester, but the winter difference is HUGE. |
|
SC has really lax gun laws. Castle Doctrine, no duty to retreat in public or private property. You can own suppressors, SBRs, machine guns, whatever, as long as you meet the Federal requirements.
We have a constitutional carry bill going through right now for no permit carry. It's NC that's messed up. |
|
VA and SC aren't too bad. I like SC a bit more because of the warmer winters, the 6 hour seperation is the differnce between snow in VA and 55* in SC. NC has some weird gun laws, just check the hometown forums for all the "How do I set up a trust to own fun toys". FL is way too hot. GA is way too muggy but better then FL. AL nad Missisippi are only cool if your into trailer parks and swamps.
Gun-wise pretty much everythings legal in SC and not hard to get approval for (class 3) the only weird catch is no open carry, but CCW is easy to get. |

You must not have been to the parts of Alabama I've been to. ...or perhaps we just reacted to your attitude problem. Are you implying a guy from the northeast came to the south and acted like a smug, condescending jerk? I don't believe that's possible! |

I've lived there before. Plenty of good states out West to consider. Southeast because that's the region that is currently open. Sir, FWIW my younger brother moved to Appleton when he got out of the Navy. As soon as he had the opportunity he relocated to Virginia. He has been in the Frediricksburg area since the mid '90s. I've lived in SE Virginia off and on for many years and like it alot. Virginia has some good gun laws, a very potent gun lobby in the Virginia Citizens Defense League, and CCW reciprocity with some adjoining states except Maryland. Beaches, boating, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, skiing, and historic site sight seeing , are all within relatively short driving distances. Traffic congestion in the Tidewater region has become significantly worse in recent years due to failure of our legislature to enact meaningful road maintenence and construction budgets and growth in the area has caused major congestion at the various traffic choke points such as local tunnels and bridges. After many years working for the US Navy I am now about to retire and due to the congestion and state taxes I am seriously looking for property in western Tn. I hope to be living there before the year is over. JMHO, 7zero1. |

I'd say NC has better job opportunities and is generally "nicer" to live in than SC. We have superb mountains and some of the best beaches. On the other hand, NC has property tax on vehicles (same with VA), the state is in the red and the gas tax is one of the highest in the country. I've also noticed a New Jerseyfication of the populated areas in the last 20 years. It beats anywhere I've lived or travelled to above VA though. |

People from VT and WI and MI and all those other states north of the MD line should stay where they are. It would be misery for them to move down here. |

I like GA... Been here 22 years now. Same here, I've been here for 14 yrs but OP scratch NC off your list. I'm from NC and that state has changed a LOT, it's closer to a N.E state and It's no surprise why the DNC is having their convention in Charlotte. If you pick where in the S.E you can live, I'd put Charleston high on your list. Nothing wrong with the greater Atlanta area but make sure you're waaaaaay outside the city limits. |

Gas in NC is freaking high. SC and GA are significantly lower. NC also has some wonky gun laws, especially when it comes to handguns. At least they reciprocate with GA now. SC doesn't. GA has great gun laws. That really pisses me off as I have to travel through SC to visit family in NC/VA. |

I'd pick Florida, because that's exactly what I did. Northern FL is a lot more conservative and gun-friendly than the southern region, which is NY South. Lots and lots of northeast yankees.
No state income tax. Beautiful beaches, there isn't a place in Florida that's more than 50 miles from a coastline. Women wear minimal clothing for most of the year, bikinis are always in season, thank god. We have the best fishing in the US. Kennedy Space Center - you can even watch rocket launches from your backyard from most of the state. Daytona 500, Sebring, Rolex 24, Bike Week, Biketoberfest, natural springs fed by underwater caves, diving - if you get bored in Florida, blame yourself. Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, etc. are centrally located, so it's a weekend getaway. Your kids will appreciate it, believe me. And so will you. Plus, there's a lot of special deals for FL residents. If you move to Florida, expect a lot of your northern relatives to pay you visits. The bad? It's hot and humid, especially for a Wisconsin native. We have two seasons in Florida - Summer and January. But hey, you can get used to it. Hurricanes can be a concern. I moved here in 1990, and I'll never leave. |

I was stationed at Ft Benning for almost 3 years. Columbus GA was miserable to live in, but then we lived in a trailer park. |

Funny, I can do the exact same, and then drive to Florida with complete CCW reciprocity. Hmmm... NC went red for the first time in over a century in 2010. Times are a changin' here (for the better). |
