Samples of a couple instrumentals done by my band in recent months. We're a Genesis tribute, doing mostly the older progressive stuff. I recorded these in our rehearsal hall on my iMac using Logic Pro. Sorry no vocals - we're searching for our Peter/Phil right now. I'm the bass & bass pedals guy (some guitar). I have more if anyone's interested.

I've posted it elsewhere, but here's some of my stuff...
This is just some three-chord stuff when I played in my band...wrote this, sang it and played the leads. Here's another, which is actually a true story about a dude who got arrested in his ex-girlfriend's parents garage where he had been living, believing the parents were "hiding" her from him, when in fact she had left for college. This is some of the musical stuff I did on my own, loops I'd build and then play solos or test riffs on, but they turned into their own kind of music. |

I was just a bass player in a garage band until late in the meme war when I got called up. I'd get off work and throw something together and whip up a video the next day to post them up. Not really a singer, but I do play a little guitar too.

Post my music here? Okay....
This is an "old school" 60's/70's rock tune that I wrote, composed, arranged, played all the instruments, and recorded on a big multitrack recorder, back around 2014. The whole gist of the song, stems from me being only around 8 yrs old... 9 yrs old... during the heyday of Vietnam. I remember watching the Huntley/Brinkley Report, and of course Walter Cronkite on the evening news after dinner. I was still a little kid, but old enough to know what was going on. Fast foward all these decades later, and I reflected on stories that my two older (now, late ) brothers-in-law had told me about Vietnam. Somehow, someway, for some bizarre, it was like a lightning bolt hit me, and I had to create a song that honored all the Vietnam Veterans, along with inserting wording and lyrical phrases based on what my older brothers-in-law told me back in the day. Drums: Composed in Finale (music annotation software). I wrote the percussion track, cymbal crashes, tom-tom fills, etc... and saved it. Keyboards: Me Bass guitar: Me Trumpet: Me Trombone: Me Electric guitar - rhythm: Me Electric guitar - wah-wah solo: Me (captured live in one take. I don't think I could play this the same way again. I channeled Jimi Hendrix and Terry Kath (Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4) when I launched into it), and just let it rip, and played whatever I played. The outro solo came straight from the heart, capturing the feel and retrospective timeline of the late 60's for all the Vietnam Veterans. Lead & Harmony vocals: Me* *excuse my vocals, as I am NOT primarily a lead singer. I am a multi-instrumentalist, NOT a singer! If my vocals are sour, well... hey, at least I tried and gave it my best shot! Vietnam Heroes (my heartfelt tribute to all the brave Vietnam Veterans) |

I played bass on this EP. I composed about 40% of the track at 13:20 time frame. Former bass player was the vocalist and when they decided to add a better singer that put the vocalist back on the bass and me out of the band. They went on to release a full length album. Shane the vocalist transitioned back to bass and became Amy a trans girl.

Was going through some backing tracks I hadn’t heard or done anything with.
Found this and thought, “that feels good”. Plugged in, dropped a mic in front of the amp and knocked this out. Complete improv, one take. https://soundcloud.com/jparry335/back-in-the-fusion-groove-4-27-2023 |

View Quote Eh, vocals are fine. You should have outsourced the drums to a real drummer though, I hate programmed drums. I'm just impressed at how many instruments you played here. |

This has been a project 25 years in the making. I started writing this symphony when I was 17, before I had any musical training, just a deep love of listening to music and wanting to write my own. Even though the original was unrefined and unclear in its structure and story, the potential was all there. But I felt stuck after about 12 years, and finally lost confidence and didn't touch it for another 12 or so years. I finally decided to try to tackle it again a few months ago, and suddenly I've found that I'm able to do it. I think it took some emotionally difficult times and facing them and growing from them that allowed me to finally tap into what I couldn't earlier in my life. For the first time ever I felt like I was actually able to feel the music and its flow, and listen to what it was telling me needed changed, where it wanted to go, what it was trying to say, almost like it wrote itself. It was an amazing experience.
This is a complete reworking of the original 1st movement that I haven't touched since then, and it's almost incomparable to the original except in the themes and ideas. I have already started the second movement, and hope to have the entire symphony finished in the next 6-12 months. I'd love to hear critiques and comments. The notation, dynamic markings, etc. is quite sloppy in places because the program I use is not very versatile. I used Notion 6. Failed To Load Title This symphony is in the style of the late Romantic period, which is pretty much the only music I listen to. This movement, and the symphony as a whole when it's finished, is in a way a symphonic poem as well, as it tells a musical story. It explores the journey of a "fallen hero" protagonist who is trying to rediscover his lost hope, strength, peace and joy. Sometimes he curses the heavens, sometimes he feels heartache and great sorrow, sometimes confusion, and other times simply dead inside. Then sometimes he finds moments of tranquility, love and hope that he tries to grasp onto but which always end up slipping away. At the end, utterly defeated and giving up any effort to control his situation and save himself, a gentle offer of hope unexpectedly appears. The journey will continue in the next three movements. The piece starts in C minor, establishes the primary and derivative motifs as well as other ideas that are explored and used as connective tissue throughout the piece, and then modulates to Ab major, which then changes to the relative minor of F. It remains in F minor for most of the rest of the piece, with various temporary modulations here and there. Finally, at the point where the hero's hubris convinces him that he has finally climbed out of his emotional pit purely through his own determination and will, he suddenly comes crashing down harder than ever, at which the piece abruptly modulates to F# minor, a tritone away from the original C minor, symbolizing the sudden unexpected and utterly devastating dashing of growing hope. It stays in F# minor for a while, until at the very end, when it seems all hope is lost, a glimmer of hope from a source outside of our protagonist shows itself just before the end, where it modulates to the tritone back to C where it started - but this time, not to C minor, but to a surprise C major. |
