I have been really tossing around the idea of adding a precision AR to my collection.

I have one Spikes stripped lower left, just laying around and begging for a mate.

My question is, what companies should I be looking at for a good quality precision upper? I want to make this a really nice finished rifle, Im willing to drop some coin on this one, in upper, optics and stock.

What kind of accuracy at what kind of yardage can I expect out of a good build?

I have no experience or knowledge in precision AR's, I own a few other AR's and want to broaden my collection a bit, plus have something to shoot some whistle pigs at the family farms this spring.

So any advice you guys have to offer would be great.

Thanks guys.

Spend the money on the barrel and the trigger. Thats where I think it really matters.

As for accuracy it just depends. Do you plan on handloading? If not I'd set 3/4" to 1" 5 shot groups as a reasonable expectation but you'll have to try a few different brands out to find a good one. Handloading and with patience and skies the limit.

Thats what I figured for the most part, but any ideas on what barrels, or what triggers?

As far as triggers go, I should be OK. But Im clueless on barrels.

Thanks.

By 'precision' are you looking for something to shoot CMP matches with?

I have one of each of these:

I don't think you can get any more 'precision' than these. I'm sure there are custom builders out there probably in the same class.

Theres a ton of good choices. I live and die by Krieger. Got mine from Compass Lake. Just could not be happier. A Douglas would also be a fine choice for a less expensive barrel to cut your teeth on so to speak.

Otherwise I would also smile with a Lilja, Broughton, Douglas, Mike Rock, Hart, Pac-Nor and I know there has to be a half a dozen again I forgot.

You also can't go wrong with a Noveske stainless barrel...They are partially made by Pac-Nor and finished by Noveske.

275 yards or so on a 8" steel plate. I'll ring it all damn day without even trying.

As for ideas....I've wanted to do another build. I have thought of something along the following lines. Mind you theres a 1000 good ways to build a benchrest rig using 100 different vendors....

A monolithic rail. It allows mounting of all kinds of optic options and no worries of having problems bridging the gap on the handguard to receiver. You have a long arsed rail to mount whatever wherever. Admittedly the JP Enterprise rails give me tingling feelings.....From a form perspective love the JP/VLTOR look. From a function I just dont think you can beat a monolithic.

Compass Lake barrel. I had a 24" and man, thats a long stick. Had them cut it to 22" and thread for suppressor. If you dont truly intend to do some damned long shooting go 20". You give up very little out to 6 or 800 yards compared to the longer barrels and the ease of moving it around is nice. Comes with matching bolt.

Zeiss optics. They seem to be a good compromise between the lesser ended budget optics and the extreme high end. LaRue QD mount to allow stepping down to something like a 1-4 for more dynamic engagements. Not only that but having that 20" barrel makes it feasible to think of doing something more than sit on a bench with it.

Less than 30 round mags. If you are at a bench the length of the 30 round mag is a pain in the ass. 20 rounders are a decent fit and keep you from having the rifle way the hell up in the air like a flag to clear the mag length.

JP Enterprise trigger. Love mine. Have one in both my go-to gun as well as my benchrest rig.

Thats just my opinion. And you know what they say about opinions.....

I like the look of these, but haven't had the opportunity to fire any.
