So say I want to make precise shots at 100 on paper and 700 on steel, would prone be the best position or off a bench rest sitting down?

ETA

Any caliber

1moa or 1/2moa at 100 if I am lucky.

Man size steel targets from 700+

Steal or steel?

Prone or bench both work well invest in a bi-pod.

You will be in jail for stealing.

Prone is the most stable if you have a rest.  Bench rest is good if you have a steady bench.ETA and rest.

Next time I go to the outdoor range I will have to try prone forsure, cause lately everything form zeroing the gun to 300 is off a bench.

So which do you prefer if I have a rest in prone and steady bench.

Prone, unable to find good steady benches. Unless you free fire you can see movement through the scope from you heartbeat.

I shoot best from a prone position - its how I grew up shooting accurately, so it just works out better for me.  Plus I feel that its more useful / practical from shooting from a bench - although shooting from a bench with a rifle sandbagged front and rear is great for testing loads, determining maximum accuracy, etc.

Putting a bag under the buttstock makes all the difference in the world shooting from a bench.  It keeps your heart beat from causing the crosshairs to jump among other steadiness.

How about a clinch fist under the stock?

I've tried that too among other things but nothing works as well as the proper bag made for sticking under the buttstock. You can also squeeze it to make minor adjustment in aim.

I went with bench rest because poll did not specify if it is prone supported and prone unsupported. From my time at BCT during record fire I shot 20/20 foxhole supported and 19/20 prone unsupported - missed a 300 meter :(

If prone a bi-pod and mono-pod or your fist. If you want to do setting, try a tri-pod. and bone on bone support

The same concept works equally well in prone w/ a bipod.  It makes a world of difference and only adds ounces to the pack for a baby bag or bone.

Bench rest is for the elderly and the handicapped.

I voted bench rest only because I seldom can ever get a good clear line of sight to my target in the prone position.

In a good rest, you can get an almost perfectly still shot off.  That's also what I use to boresight in my rifles.

For something with hefty recoil proper prone position keeps your whole body mass in line behind the rifle minimizing any shift but some people have an easier time keeping consistent posture and sight picture from a bench. I like bench myself.

That is 4sure, but it's also good to know as many shoot positions and techniques as possible just in case. I am also interested in sitting down taking shots off shooting sticks or a tripod.

Yeah, not so much.  Each has its merits, pros and cons. To say that one is better than the other isn't correct.  Tell me how a bag is more stable than a bipod with rear pod??   It ain't.  Never will be either.

If your talking absolute accuracy the bench is the only answer. If you go to a match where tiny groups are ALL that matter, do you see anyone prone if bench shooting is allowed? ANYONE?

Go check out some F Class shooting.  A bunch of guys with sandbags & tee shirts shooting up to 1,000 yards.

While there is nothing wrong with a $600 coat, a sling & iron sights, F class is more approachable than Palma.  If you have a decent bolt gun, you can play.  It is addictive, and the people involved are pretty friendly. Depending on where you live in CA there is probably a match close to you.

OP, have this moved to the Precision Forum here on ARFCom and then get your answers.  Trying to get real, legit info here in the GD is asinine.  Every ducking poster is a door gunner, entry team leader, SEAL, or sniper depending on the thread.  Plus, others get their info and tactics from COD and other friggen games.
