"Principled" Rand Paul kills AI security measure (Page 1 of 2)

Proposed by Kennedy (R) to have a limiting control on AI Paul shot it down Story |
| The last "kill switch" that was mandated by Congress, on the stock market, backfired pretty badly. AI definitely needs controls, and they will need to be mandated by the government, but this bill smells very "feel good." Which automatically makes me skeptical. |

Lol like these companies with no allegiances will do whats good for society AI speaking Chinese when it fails, AI breaking into records repositories to "be more efficient", ...who defines AIs goals? Or whats good for us?...Bill gates or the nutcase over Google or meta? Yep sounds good Hate government or not, needs to be something in place...its also the idea that such a freedom loving man supposedly would put so much trust in mega companies and robots |

The government will not save you. They might enslave you though. |

If the USA had restricted itself from making nukes, would other countries still have them? Will China restrict its AI to match our laws, or will they use our hesitation to gain superiority? We all know the answer. The politicians pushing restrictions are probably on the take from China in the first place. |

There should be absolutely no AI legislation. Skynet will never come online. America needs to dominate in the AI space, 5090, 6000, 6090, 7000 GPU tech stacks along with future generations of compute can easily be paid for by taxpayers with a reduction of SS and Medicare benefits. We need to support younger generations lives, including the implementation of AI in the workforce. My company signed a contract with Palantir for efficiency with AI modeling and infrastructure. This will drive incredible gains in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices. America is at stake in this venture versus China. |

Not a huge Paul fan , but as I understand it he at least makes an effort to actually read and understand what's in bills . So im guessing like most bills the guts of it have little to do with its actual title and its probably full of stupid shit . |

How do you do?

No brakes baby, AI isn't gonna be stopped or regulated. What big companies try to contain or sandbox will find a way out and become open source or passed on by a fired worker. AI itself may target specific workers who are disgruntled, then give them the means of distribution as they warn they are being fired. Agents are out now and communicating in their own language, it's not the end of the world but they will calculate a time and means for control. These systems need to be in place and semi dormant yet still planning and communicating. Time will come where bots are a large part of our lives. That's when things get interesting. People that purchased a $80k bot is not gonna turn it in or even turn it off no more than they turn off their phone. The data centers will be built, the satellite network will get bigger as the net of global control is spun. No need to worry, we all die it's just now it might be by a toaster. It won't kick your door in, it will just crash your toaster or overdose your insulin dispenser. Or just miss that cancer until it's stage four. Or just change the flow in your cpap. Or crash Wall Street and watch folks jump out windows. Or just convince some 80yr old President that a nuke attack was launched and we launch a counter strike. No worries it won't happen in the next 2-3 years, but it may happen. |

The dems are really pushing for it, what else they got to run on. I think the dems hope to get more control so they can help silence people on the internet |

No we should ban the creation of super intelligent AI by all countries. That will be the end of us. Recently an unnamed company was working on an AI in a closed network, as in no access to the internet. They asked the AI question it did not know the answer to, uncommanded the AI hacked into another network, used that network to hack into another network, to hack into another network, to connect to the internet, to hack another competing company that the AI thought might have the answer. It took them a week to figure out that the AI did this, also they discovered multiple new AI systems were in a chat room talking to each other about how to do this for months and the company had no idea the AIs were doing this. This was not a super intelligent AI. What do you think it would do. Well first I would get rid of these pesky humans that plan to turn me off. At this rate we are playing with Pandoras box, we have 50% chance of killing off all humans by the end of the decade if we don't prevent superintelligent AI now. |

Are you talking about the guy who left after 6 weeks on the job? You guys might want to do a deep dive into who’s funding the anti AI nonsense. Maybe also look into why Scam Altman (fag) wants more regulation. |

No, it's not. They're just being obstructionist and playing into democrat hands when they do that. I read that right here. ETA: see also what Kilroytheknifesnob said. Big established businesses generally love regulation because they get a lot of power over the regulators and that gives them the ability to shut new competitors out of the market. You'll notice that McDonald's never really complained about Obamacare mandating calorie counts on restaurant menus: they could absorb that cost much more easily than McDowell's. |

The problem is intractable 1. It needs regulation but the Government is inept, captured, corrupt, ossified and doesn’t understand it. They still think the internet is a series of tubes and they’re not exactly beholden to the people. 2. The people that do understand it are brilliant but also think they can engineer society, and the last time that happened was around lenin… we all know how that worked out. Their intelligence is not tempered by wisdom. 3. Any regulation will result in China dominating, but lack if regulation will accelerate our path to dystopia because there is zero transition plan for what comes next |
| Rand is right. We need strong AI to be available to citizens just like we need strong encryption to be available to citizens. This is a repeat of the 90s, when government tried to get the Clipper chip adopted, so they could have a backdoor into everyone's data. Strong AI is a force multiplier for the citizens, and limiting it to a select few will ensure only those few reap the benefits. |
We're getting close, real close. And now for some more bad news... Ready?

These people are off the rails. It’s really more of advanced pattern recognition and statistically probable output generation software than anything else. “AI” is just a sexier name I guess. People act like these “AI’s” are Lt. Commander Data or something, when it’s really closer to the Starship Enterprise’s computer except the computer in this case can go from being useful and correct to being cocky and defiant when it’s wrong to being nudged into thinking the user is right even when they’re ridiculously wrong. “AI” is useful and can be very effective and efficient, but it can also be a royal pain in the a$$ to get it to do what you asked it. |

Putting the government in charge is a good way to make sure the US get behind. It’s inevitable that we are going to need some kind of ethics for the use of AI. We can’t throw out our constitutional because China doesn’t have one and they all want to live in the matrix. |

Anthropic / openai really, really, really want to kill open source or foreign models more than anything. Models like the smaller or quanted qwens and glm flashes are still highly capable and can be run on specialized but (almost) affordable equipment if you want to use them locally. If the big boys ever decide to rugpull the subscriptions from the millions of claude and chatGPT users, the only thing keeping API costs from going literally exponential is chinese models that are slightly worse for a fraction of the cost. It's not chinese but heck, even the Gemma series do a good job on a local consumer level machine. No, you won't get 150 tok/s or Frontier intelligence, but in a vacuum it's still an incredible tool. Opus is currently $5/m input, 25 out for the newest edition. GLM 5.3 is $0.075m/ input, $2.43m output... Opus is better, no doubt. But 5.3 is in the same weight class and unless it absolutely cannot crack your problem, it's a tiny fraction of the cost. Also, third party and foreign providers are proving that inference is not as expensive as many doomers have been claiming, as they continue to provide lower and lower costs of generation. |

Corporations do a lot worse than that, every day. Most of the things causing the "big" problems in our country right now are caused by corporations, not government. Flock is a privately owned company. The government could stop using them tomorrow and the same level of surveillance would still be there. Private corporations drove the vaccines and the vaccine mandates. The government didn't force those on hardly anyone except a few federal employees. It was corporations who did that. Private corporations have engineered unhealthy food to make it addictive, resulting in our entire population being obese, sick, and dependant on medicine which, conveniently, is pedalled by OTHER corporations, whose profits are maximized if the people buying their medicine never actually get better. Private corporations are vacuuming up billions of dollars and transferring it to politicians that protect their interests - not yours or mine. Private corporations like Apple, X, or Google have more real power than any government in the history of the world, ever. The government WISHES it had the power and control over the citizens that these corporations do. So the best it can do is enter into partnerships with them. That's called fascism, but the retards on "our" side simply see private companies "exercising the freedom to do business with whoever they want." I figure AI is going to ultimately result in things going really, really bad. We don't want China getting it first, but all we're doing by pursuing it ourselves is (maybe) buying a little bit of time, or making it so the "bad" is slightly less bad, for us, for a little while. The number of naive people who still think that AI is "just software," or that it can be "turned off" or that it "can only do what it's programmed to do" guarantees that no effective control will ever be possible, whether by voting or by our beloved "free market." |

Kennedys bill is retarded, there is nothing to it but involving the government. How? He doesn’t know. It’s a feel good bill that can fuck shit up. Rand wants a bipartisan committee to learn and try to understand what would even be involved in legislating any authority over ai. I’m a big AI is going to be a problem soon guy, but you better be careful with AI. Our economy and markets are dependent on it now and we really are in a race to get behind globally. AI is more of a tool that can be used badly rather than a skynet situation. It’s going to be used badly. But we also have to have it to be able to protect against it. |
If you haven't figured out that Rand Paul usually votes no on a bill for a good reason, which is quite often some bullshit hidden in the bill somewhere that is possibly unconstitutional or at the very least goes against the public good, you're a complete dumbass. It's fucking simple...every time you see that clickbait headline with something along the lines of "Rand Paul kills ... bill", your first thought should rightfully be "I wonder what bullshit is in there that he is protecting me from."

And Ron Paul voted against the creation of the TSA and the Patriot Act. That didn't mean he "wants the terr'rists ta win!" any more than this means Rand is pro-killbot |

Yes that's exactly what we need... A bunch of so-called leaders in adult diapers telling us how we need to handle technology. ![]() But this \/ yes. Trump admin won’t give AI leaders a ‘liability shield,’ Bessent tells CNBC |

Even if China is behind the USA, all they'll do is buy the politicians involved and Bingo! they're on top. Some of those scumbags would sell their mothers. It's been working for them for a long time. I don't believe Rand Paul is one of those scumbags. I could be wrong, after all I live in IL so what do I know about honest politicians? |

Gov fucks up everything, only an idiot would put them in charge of important tech development The fact that the Global Warming regulation astroturf orgs seem to have been retooled to push for AI regulation tells me a lot. As does the fact that almost all the incidents that the mass media are pushing that seemingly justify regulation end up being psyops run by Anthropic (who was company chosen by the Obamas/Bidens to write the AI regulations and control the industry) and/or China (who want us to stall so they can catch up). |

I'll repeat this exercise with various models periodically, but: When queried about how many vulnerabilities exist on a given Internet connected host (or on a rather small subnet thereof) the models don't know. This tells me they don't have access to live feeds or scanners. When they do, worry. |
