I have an old but reliable HP inkjet 2200 that I've set up the drivers for, I know it works (prints a test page), but it won't print documents.  Device manager indicates the port (LPT 1) works.  What gives?  Assuming the port specification is wrong, how can I confirm the port is correctly specified?  I should note that Windows indicates that the printer if out of paper, even though that is not the case.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot printers?

Bump, because I'm on a time limit.

Since it printed the test page, at least something must be working. What program are you using to print the document?  Is the "new" printer set as default, or are you selecting it from the print dialog when you try to print?

Printer is set as the default & uses a parallel cable; wasn't plug-&-play, as windoze didn't detect it when I hooked it up.  I downloaded the driver from HPs site & ran the install, which seemed to take.  Interestingly, the specific print-failure error message I get indicates that the printer is out of paper, which is incorrect.

how's the parallel port configured in BIOS?
from memory there's 3 or 4 possibilities I think. ECP, EPP, bidirectional
that might make a difference

Alright, can I check setup from windoze, or do I have to go to reboot & bypass the OS & go directly to the BIOS screen?

You need to reboot and go into the BIOS config.  You want the port set to ECP.

I'll try it.  Thanks!
