Got the saw back from the shop. Bad coil. Total was $130ish. Better than I thought it’d be. Starts and runs like it should. I’m very confused though now. I was tweaking the tune, making sure it was just right. Low speed was perfect but when messing with the high speed, the adjustment didn’t do ANYTHING. Literally. Bottomed out? No change at WOT. Opened WAY up, no change at WOT. I’m puzzled but since it’s running good I’m not gonna stress over it. Now if the heat will ease off I can get caught up on some trimming that needs doing. Yep. Took my pole saw into the shop and letting them work on it. First time in years I wasn’t able to get my OPE running. Stihl ht131 that flat refused to start. Ran it a few weeks ago and it started and ran perfect. Just like it always has. Then 2 weeks ago I needed it and nothing. Wouldn’t even pop. Checked everything my limited skill set could do and nothing. It really hurt to take it in and will hurt even more paying them but I need that heavy-assed polesaw and I’m tired messing around. I put in a new plug and are filter but I’m done parts shotgunning. Even made sure it had fresh gas. I usually use the regular pump gas with ethanol and I know folks will say that’s my problem. Maybe so but it’s always been run on that just like my saws and weedeater. Sigh. If the shop comes back and says that’s my issue I guess I’ll suck it up and pay the extra $1/gal for the corn free stuff. I should really take a small engine class I guess but I’ve gotten along ok to this point. Just venting I guess. |

I had a 55 year old Ariens snow blower that I used less and less over the years. I took good care of it, but even so things fail. I always drained the fuel system after each use, and at the end of the season I drained the gas tank and added fuel stabilzer. In spite of my efforts, the carburetor was the weak link, it would get gummed up and eventually I couldn't get the engine to start. I bought a new carb and installed it (in winter temps), but after a few years that one got gummed up too. So I took it to a shop and had them refresh everything, after which it ran pretty well for a few years. But this past winter I found again it wouldn't start. So I decided to scrap it. I can't live with a machine that can't sit for a few years without degrading. I'm not ashamed of having it serviced, I was able to make it last about 55 years.

| go to amazon, get a small engine spark tester. I gave one to my neighbor, who has many engines and local kids using them. And many issues as result. If there is no spark , its either a switch or the coil. Switch is eeasy to test, meter or bypass. Still no spark, replace the coil. Sparks and no start, carb. If you are not into them, just replace the carb, ZAMA 2 stroke carbs are under 30 bucks. |

Check your exhaust screen if plugged it can result in no start. To clean a flame source will work. Another thing to look at is your fuel filter, grab it with some forceps and see if it's due for replacement. As far as ethanol free, if you're using normal gas with 10% ethanol, ethanol shield works well. |

Hummm when I handed her my saw I’d wondered what she was doing asking for my man card. That snipping sound I heard before she handed it back is explained now. 🤣 If it proves to be an ethanol issues then I guess I’ll have to suck it up and just pay the tarrif from now on. It’s easier to find nowadays at least. For awhile I’d have to drive a couple miles outta my way to get. What’s so bad is this saw has been extremely easy to start for most of its life. Hoping it’s just a carb at end of life. |

If not, don’t need the catalytic screen and yanked it out and handed him back his weed whacker and sent him on his way. No charge. |
| Dammit. Now im kicking myself. I completely forgot about checking the exhaust screen. Well now if that turns out to be the issue I’ll happily pay the dummy tax and just remember it in the future. I’m usually pretty good about pulling those and burning them off but just totally didn’t even cross my mind. |
