Shopping car insurance quotes, and see Progressive offers up to a 30% reduction for using this device. It would attach to the computer port under the dash and record some car information while I'm driving.
I'm curious how it would rate my driving. I don't drive fast, and only 5K miles a year. My commute is 2 miles every 3 days. Any experiences here? |
|
Supposedly it is only used to verify how many miles you drive at this point. Obviously it will be expanded to record your driving habits, speeds, locations, etc. once it gains acceptance. It hooks into the OBD II outlet and has access to pretty much all information your car generates. Not worth whatever the discount is to me. |

That. On newer vehicles, TONS and TONS of data can be seen through the OBDII port. Quoted:

No way, not me. no thanks. That. On newer vehicles, TONS and TONS of data can be seen through the OBDII port. You ain't lying. I tried it once. Apparently, masturbating while driving will raise your premium by about 15%!

| Being a independent agent I have put clients on the snapshot program and got 30% on my own personal policy. What they look for is hard breaking, mileage and the time of day or night you drive. They don't like high miles and hate people who drive late at night. If you drive less than 5k a year you should get at least 30%. Try not to sign up during winter while snow is on the street. That will trigger "hard breaking" when you slip on the ice then stop when you get traction again. They won't raise your rate if you are a poor driver they just won't offer much of a discount. It puts the price in your hands and you keep the discount for the life of the policy. If you do poorly you can attempt again. I think its worth a try if you want to save a few bucks. |

Before anyone really tries the snapshot, I'd recommend getting a $10 bluetooth OBDII connector from Amazon and downloading the Torque app for Androids. Look at all the data that can be seen, then decide if you want to share that with your insurance company. |

It shows you the MPH the speed you were driving at what time.

I'm usually home by nightfall. Late at night? After midnight I presume? I leave for work around 6AM one day, and get home around 8AM the next morning. Sometimes my car will sit in the garage for 2 days until I have to go to work again. I lead such an exciting life... |
|
I tried it on a couple vehicles, It records date time you are driving (high risk time of day vs low risk) as well as beeps at you and records a hard brake or hydroplane or really fast acceleration. Its annoying but i got a 23% discount on my daily commuter (lower due to driving at 4am every morning I got to work "high risk" time of day) and 30% off the vehicle I hardly ever drove at the time. |
|
It encourages you to run yellow lights and swerve rather than brake hard, and it is bad to drive between midnight and 4am. at least in my experience.
You may or may not be able to cheat it and only have it plugged in for a couple trips a week when you aren't driving during bad hours or when there is lots of retarded traffic like I may or may not have. I got a 21% discount IIRC.

I did it and saved like 26%. My buddy who is a pretty aggressive driver still saved like 15%. Mine didn't beep at me like people are saying
They have you attach it for about a month and then send it back. It measures your acceleration and deceleration and if you drive at late at night. You can log on to their website and see the log of your mileage and any of your aggressive stops/accelerations that count against you. I remember one day on my way home I made a quick u-turn that ended up counting as 3 aggressive brakes so watch that if you decide to do it. |
| I would say you should get at least 20 to 30% based on what I have seen. I have a client who I know drives like a maniac and one who drives to work everyday and they both got 6%. My truck just sat at home for most of the time and only got used on the weekends and I got 30. If the price is close to your other options then you would have a chance to get a better rate. |

My insurance would go up significantly if I used that. If my insurance could go up any more, then mine probably would also. I'm currently paying $247/mo. with a clean driving record and a good credit score! I really need to go ahead and switch-over my DC license to a VA license. |

Problem for me is even at 30% that would save me less than $20/month. Not worth it to me. (I drive a paid for 2000 silverado with liability only. Insurance is cheap when your over thirty and have a great driving record.) |

It tracks your driving for a month. You then mail it back. Just don't stop and pick up hookers for a month. Is that so hard?

Late model OEM vehicle telemetry already does this. While not as readily available as the Progressive solution, the data is more and more being used in post-crash litigation and some auto makers have even been phoning the data home without owner knowledge or consent. Bills introduced to allow consumers to turn off data recording have failed due to industry heavyweights lobbying against protecting consumers privacy in the interest of monitoring and underwriting behavior. Your car is becoming a real time big brother and soon to be tax collector too. http://www.kliemanlyons.com/2014/09/vehicle-telematics-a-useful-litigation-tool-for-attorneys-a-boon-to-insurers-and-the-privacy-concerns-big-data-raises-for-us-all/ If you’ve bought an automobile in the last ten years, chances are that
it has an event data recorder (EDR) or "black box” that has the ability to record your speed, rpm, engine load, temperature, acceleration, braking, steering input, the physics of any collision and other data. According to published industry sources, 96 percent of all automobiles manufactured for sale in the United States have some sort of digital telematics data recorder, event data recorder or black box. As reliance on telematic devices becomes greater by insurers, drivers may one day be faced with the difficult choice between obtaining affordable insurance and surrendering their right to privacy. Clearly, the legal system is just beginning to grapple with the privacy concerns posed by telematics. |
