Who here has it and does it work?
http://www.progressive.com/auto/snapshot/ Big brother is watching.

It plugs into the diagnostic port in your car's computer, measuring things like throttle position, brake application, etc. It is allegedly non-GPS, simply measuring how you drive, not where you drive. Unless you drive like a grandmother, I wouldn't recommend it. I have Allstate (but not for much longer), and they offered me a discount of $110 every six months if I took the device. Fuck that. I don't need an insurance actuary as a back seat driver. |

I've toyed with the idea of using one of their free "trials" to see how high of a quote I could rack up... Your premium can't go up, no matter how shitty you drive. It can only go down. Now, I imagine if you drive TERRIBLE, they might non-renew your policy. |

I've been with Statefarm for more years than I'd like think but if forced to plug this in I'd pull everything(vehicle & home ins) and change. Geico can go Fuck themselves |

My biggest fear is at some point all the auto insurance companies will try to force this data monitoring device type shit on us or, if we refuse, we will get punished by higher rates.
If that shit happens, I will plug in, drive a couple times a week around the block at 25mph, park it, and borrow my mom's car. |

The device should be able to read what type of ECU it's connected to....thus telling them if you plugged it into the right car. |

As someone who has never caused an accident nor cost any insurance company money (and who has driven for 20+ years) I, personally, think it's utter BS that someone who accelerates slow or brakes slow is some how a better driver. I accelerate faster than some douche in a Prius who's trying to get the gold star for saving the earth and probably brake faster too, but I stay out of other people's way and don't fuck up other people's day. I must be a statistical anomaly.
I wish I could have the thousands and thousands of dollars I've put in to this system back. |

I must be a statistical anomaly. I wish I could have the thousands and thousands of dollars I've put in to this system back. When I used it, they didn't measure acceleration, only braking. And I only saw one braking event register in the whole 30 days, and it was a full on panic stop. That's what they're looking for. If you panic stop all the time, it's because you follow too closely all the time. Even then, you're 'allowed' 2 per trip |

What's wrong with a free market company deciding how to price their product? I think it's pretty cool technology. Reckless drivers are more costly to insure and they should pay more if the company is trying to maximize their revenue compared to their expense. |

I did the Progressive snapshot thing. I hated myself for doing it, but I earned a 28% discount for the life of the policy.
I think you have to really drive like a douche to NOT get a discount. I was pretty careful, and tried to stay under 70mph (max speed on interstates in MI). I Drive quite a bit, ( I average nearly 20,000 miles a year), and several times I did have to drive during their "high risk" times (midnight to 4 am I think). I think the thing that takes the biggest chunk out of your potential discount is hard stops (I think that was classified as 7mph per second, and it adds up so you slam on the brakes for 3 seconds on the highway, that's 3 hard stops)... so get used to leaving a big gap while out driving. Sure some hard stops can't be avoided, but do what you can to prevent them while using the device. Also... If you spin you tires in the snow, it'll read that as a hard stop when the wheels stop spinning. So unplug that shit if you get stuck in the snow. That's another thing, you can unplug the device vary sparingly. I had to unplug it 3 times to do some diagnostic work. I was worried they were going to cancel the discount program on me for having to do it, but they didn't. |

I'm really not sure what it was that only gave me a 5% discount to start with....They recomended driving less...but in comparison to you...I barely drive anywhere. I do have a few "Hard Stops", but they couldn't be avoided. I drive 70% city and 30% highway. In the city is where it happens to me the most. It's almost as if the thing encourages for me not to stop for Yellow lights. |
|
If you are buying insurance from Progressive you are aiding those who are funding anti-gun groups and anti-freedom socialist politicians on a massive scale.
Are you willing to save just a little bit in your wallet to sacrifice your freedoms? If so, you need to re-evaluate your priorities in life. |

Oh I definitely blew a lot of orange traffic lights during my six months with snapshot... in the end I think I only had about 6 hard stops. |

"Just a little bit" in my case is about 1500 bucks a year... and for someone who works full time, then spends my little bit of money I do earn on tuition... That is a lot of money to me. Being from MI, you surely must know the significant level of fuck that is our insurance laws.... |

You also clearly don't know who I work for. |

I would advise against anything that would put you in a bad light with your insurance company. Them finding out you drive 25 over the limit everywhere even though you don't get a ticket just gives them their own easy way of jacking up your rates.
I think it's a terrible idea and it just makes things that easier for them to blame you in an accident or some other situation. |

build a farady cage around it.
wiki link It stops radio waves from penetrating it. your microwave uses it to keep the radiation inside from getting out. Put your cell phone in the microwave and close the door(dont turn it on) and put it so u can see the screen. you lose service completely |

What are you insuring that used to cost you $5,500 a year just in insurance?

It's clearly stated that your rates will never go up due to your driving habits found out by the device. The only direction they can go is down or you simply wont get a discount at all. |

For example...It was about $600 a year cheaper for me to use Progressive over State Farm, Alstate, and Gieco. When money is tight...every penny/dollar counts. |

If they determine that you live in an area with insufficient cell service, they provide you with one that must be plugged into your internet connected PC on some kind of schedule. |

Anyone who put that in their car deserves what they get.
Give it time, all of that data will be used against you. Insurance companies are like lawyers, they never make a move or ask a question without having an ulterior motive. Prepare your anus. <---- Former insurance agent, 15 years. |

Many industries are using this device in combination with GPS to track their drivers or those using company vehicles. Your driving style and habits are tracked and recorded to be used against you at a later date. People don't collect data for nothing people. There is a reason they are collecting all this info. Do you honestly think it is for your best interest or theirs? |
