Can it be considered a consensus with 2 votes or do I need more?

Ok. 3 votes.

He says, 'kills.'  My thing is that I watch decorating shows and they ALWAYS say, 'kiltz.'

I can't find the phonetic spelling anywhere.

Well...
In German the Z would be pronounced with a TZ sound, but we don't speak German.

In English, the Z might be pronounced with a S or Z sound, depending.
'Island' - drop the S

'Is' - S is a Z

'Speak' - S is a S
So, to answer your question, what language's grammar rules will you be pronouncing it under??
If it is a foreign word, use its language's rules.

If it is an English word, use English rules.
Trivia - Chef Boyardee, who was from Italy, changed the spelling of his last name at some point when he was in America so Americans would pronounce it the same was as in Italy.

From Wiki - Boiardi was quite proud of his Italian heritage. He sold his products
under the brand name Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, allowing his American customers
to pronounce his name properly (boy-AR-dee).
