Propane tank is full.  The ignitor will sometimes start the fire,  other times won't (perhaps due to wind). I can easily start with a match,  but when I release the gas knob it'll instantly turn off or sometimes it'll stay on for a minute or two and then it'll shut off. If i hold the gas knob in it stays lit.

Do I need to adjust something,  or is the weak ignitor spark causing a problem?

Thermocouple. It's bad or there's rocks or whatever you have in the fire pit too close to the tip of it.

In the pit, there should be a little square shielded box thing with the igniter and thermocouple, clear around it.

Thermocouple is likely shot.

Should be a quick fix with the replacement part.

The thermocouple or the valve attached to the thermocouple has gone bad.

Great,  thanks. I'll look into it. Never dealt with propane before. Always done wood burning

Pilot is probably plugged if flame won’t turn thermocouple end cherry red. Thermocouples are the easiest to blame by the know it alls. Properly installed, a quality T couple will last 20 years.

We have a spider around here that loves to build an egg sack in the orifice of all my propane stuff. It must be the perfect size for them. I started tying pipe cleaners to the hoses of my deck heaters and such, so I can clean them out periodically.

Clean thermocouple lightly with steel wool. If that doesn't fix replace thermocouple.  About $12. Some Chinese propane items are now using a metric thread thermocouple. I spent about 20 minutes trying to thread a standard thread thermocouple into metric device.

Plugged jet, I had a piece of Teflon tape plug one of mine.

Throw some firewood in it and light it. Problem solved.

I have a Big Buddy heater I keep in case we lose power.  Every year I have the same problem.  I end up heating the thermocoupler with one of those long butane fire starters.  I keep pushing the pilot button until it eventually lights.

Has anyone suggested adjusting or replacing the thermocouple?

Sometimes they're not close enough to the pilot flame to heat up in a reasonable amount of time, so you need to tweak the bracket a bit. I've also found that ignitors on big box store firepits and similar heaters are usually shit - I always light them with a lighter. You still need a functioning thermocouple to keep that gas on, though.

I fired my gas logs up in the house last week.  Each year I will take the fake logs out and vacuum any cobwebs and dust out before I light them.  Mine wouldn't stay lit this year when I fired them up.  Kinda of the same problem you are having.  I took a piece of 220 grit paper and polished the thermocouple and haven't had any issues since.

And that is how I know some hack or homeowner has worked on a gas appliance or system.

The second way, taping up a machine thread fitting that uses a swedge as the seal. It is amazing how many ''home despot/Mentards/Hoes'' installers do it.
