I'm wanting to propose to the GF. I've already purchased the ring she wants and have had it for about a month (she doesn't know).

I am looking for some creative/memorable ideas on how to pop the question that doesn't cost a fortune (like the ring did).

I am 25, own a construction business, she is 24, goes to college, works as an assistant manager for a massage clinic.

She is a girly girl type, very into her clothing, loves working out, and we have a german shepherd we both adore.

She has been asking me to build a shelf in the bedroom so she can put some wooden trinket she bought that says "LOVE" on it above the bed.  I was thinking of hand making a nice shelf for her and then taking a router and carving in the words "will you marry me" on the shelf, and have the ring sitting on it. Also despite owning a construction business, I suck at detailed woodwork like this would entail.

Also the shelf will have to be mounted above the window behind our bed, so it would be pretty hard to get her up that high to actually read it.

To be honest I like your idea with the carved wood piece. One way you could get her to see it is you could bring it home and have her help you install it. That way there is a rhyme and reason to have her looking up there and at the wood piece.

Also, you're in construction right? So you get to bring home plans for buildings and stuff? Maybe you could have an architect friend draw up your proposal on some architectural papers, and do something like "Hey honey, look at the awesome contract I just landed and what I get to build next?" type thing?

Just my halfway thought out, caffeine fueled ideas for you to consider.

I really like the building plan idea except she has no idea what blue prints are or the meaning of them so getting her to look with any sort of interest would be near impossible...   Pretty much the same with trying to get her to help install the shelf

I recommend maybe hanging some sort of temporary banner from your shelf that says will you marry me and put the ring (in the box, opened, facing towards the front) at the edge of the shelf.

If the shelf above the bed will be at the headboard, carve the "Will you marry me" on the bottom of the shelf, when you go to bed, lay back, she'll see it, then when she looks over to you, have the ring in hand ready to go.  Since you are in construction, see if any of your millwork contacts will throw the shelf in as a favor so you can get the detail that you like.

Here is what I did my 2nd time around:

My 'wife-to-be' (I hoped!) had a tradition with her girls of allowing them to open ONE gift from under the tree on Christmas Eve.  I wrapped her engagement ring (designed by moi) up in festive paper and a bow and placed it at eye level IN the tree's boughs. After the girls had opened their gifts (one each) and gone to bed to 'wait on Santa', we relaxed in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine and waited for the girls to go to sleep prior to 'playing Santa'.

A few minutes later I asked my 'wife-to-be' if she wanted to open a gift. 'Of course!' she replied and began looking under the tree. I 'encouraged' her to look a bit 'higher'. Her eyes got big when she spied the tiny gift, then she looked at me. I nodded.

The look on her face when she opened the ring box will be forever etched into my memories. She said 'Yes!' and now we have our own 'tradition' on Christmas Eve: She gets jewelry every Christmas Eve...from a tiny gift-wrapped box found hidden among the tree's boughs. She's like a little girl every year looking each day after the tree goes up for 'her little box'. :D
