Would a proxy service protect one from being seen what they were doing at work if they were part of a large network?

The reason I ask is I don't know how ridiculously left-wing my campus networking may be and end up shutting my connection down for looking at too many "evil" gun sites.

Depends.  A normal web proxy is still located outside your network, so it would only work if you have an encrypted connection to the proxy.  Keep in mind, though, that your local network may have a proxy in the way that can intercept secure (SSL) web connections; then you're still exposed.

Best bet is an SSH tunnel to an outside machine that is running a proxy.  The encrypted data going through the SSH connection is unreadable by any other machines on the local network.

Hmmm...shouldn't you be out terrorizing innocent motorists?

Anyway, I'm not a kornputer geek or anything, but at your "work" computer they may snoop on you and have every right to.  However, if you attend a public university and you're concerned about them snooping on your regular everyday computer usage (I know you have to use their server and all), I wouldn't sweat it because that brings up 1st amendment issues.

I don't blame you for being paranoid, but a public school would have a hell of a lot of explaining to do if they tried to censor your internet usage or take away your computer account.  Geez, think of all the pure, unadulterated donkey porn and such shit that thousands of hormonally imbalanced teenagers are going to download every day at your average university.

I doubt seriously they'll notice gun sites at all.  You'd have to actually break the law somehow.

For what it's worth, when I want to use a proxy server I use Anonymizer.  There's a free and pay version.  To use it on nasty sites you have to use the pay version.

Now watch: I'll be completely wrong and they'll throw you out of school next week for being a "potential deranged gunman."

*EDITED TO ADD: I think I ordered Anonymizer for $38 or thereabouts.  I never use it though, and honestly can't even recall why the blazes I wanted it in the first place.  Oh well.
