| What is the most effective way to increase pull ups with out use of a pull up bar? Such as, what other exercises, preferably ones that do not require equipment, such as sit ups, push ups etc, help to build the same muscles as pull ups so as to increase your total pull up count? |

I have looked all over the internet and it looks like Lat pulldowns, negatives, and pullups are about it. I did find one place saying if you didnt have a bar to get 2 4" c-clamps and use them as pullup handles. I know that pushups help because it uses the back muscles in stabilizing like planking would but I guess thats it.

KIMP go to cross fit . fucking com and learn how to kimp on a pull up it will help the deadhangs trust me i do 20 deadhang fucking usmc pull ups all day long and kimping when i practice helps builds 40+ pullups in a row which makes 20 dead hangs easy. fuking get on a bar and pull up! shit!

I remember when you could kip on a PFT, you could do the run and sit ups first and still max out on pull ups. Kipping will certainly involve more of the body (hips, core) into the effort, and is a more practical exercise than dead hangs. |

Getting rid of kipping certainly separated the men from the boys when it came to pullups. I could never kip right, so I was happy with the change. |

If I think of most situations where I would want to pull myself up, I would most likely not have the space to kip. Think of hanging on a wall, or having a perilously dangerous fall beneath you. I for one would not want reliance on kipping in those situations. I think dead-hang pullups break down the exercise to the lowest common denominator of having a strong back. To each their own of course. |
| Having climbed an obstacle or two, I can tell you that putting your whole body into it is much more effective than trying to "dead hang" muscle yourself over. This is why kipping is popular with cross-fitters- (a) it works multiple muscle groups at once, particularly your core, and (b) it's more practical than a static deadhang. That said, I think that training for deadhangs, nothing beats deadhangs and variations adding weight. |

But all that aside, kipping, deadhang, what counts is just doing them...the stronger you get you won't need to kip. I look at kipping as you are not strong enough to just crank out 'real' pullups, you have to 'cheat' your way up. Which is what kipping really is, a cheating pullup and it has it's place, they all work together. |

And, there are times that I have to do DH's due to the type of bar. Crossfit does Kipping PU's whenever a type of pullup is not specified. However, some will do DH's in leiu of the kips. |

I always get a kick out of the guys who laugh at my unbroken set of 50 kipping pullups...when I can also do around 25-30 deadhangs and pull with 115# on a vest....all with a full range of motion of course. Trust me, it's not cheating anymore than a lower weight high rep bench press is...just another tool with a slightly different stimulis (endurance vs. strength). |

| straight arm pull downs, lat pull downs, pull overs, deadlift, swimming, boxing... but the best way to do it is to do pull ups. If you can't do one then lose weight and use the assisted pull up machine working towards using less weight until you can do them unassisted and go weighted. |

I swear I saw 'em on sale for ten bucks once. OP, go get one. Seriously. Then do Recon Ron - the Armstrong program allows for too much wiggle room. Start out on Recon Ron on whatever week starts with a number of pullups in the first set that is maybe 4 below your max. Then go week by week until you are failing, not once, but regularly, and hang out at that week until you can move forward again. I was stuck at 18 pullups for ages and Recon Ron got me maxed out. As far as starting pullups, the suggestions here are good - chair assist and negatives in particular. Once you can do a couple deadhangs, just keep doing deadhangs over and over. I think all I ever did was "regular old pullups" and I don't know if I could do 3 when I first started. I wish there was a clever answer but just doing 'em, but that's the easiest answer. If you're not sore, or if you can put up the exact same sets/time two days in a row, go harder. |

| I just started doing pullups. I can do 18 chinups, but only ~5 pullups. I've been doing sets of 4. I do weighted chair dips and pushups, and they don't help with pullups at all. I'm getting close to 100 consecutive pushups, but can only do 5 measly pullups. The only thing that helps with pullups is pullups. |
