I have Direct TV
I have purchased the High Def package and get a bunch of great channels in Hi-Def
I also receive my local channels through Direct TV, but they are NOT Hi-Def.  I get none of the major networks ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX in Hi - Def

There ARE major network channels available in Hi Def but they are in the major East Coast, West Coast markets.  To quote Direct TV, they only have to "flip a switch" for me to have them, but...............

Direct TV cannot give me those channels without the permission of my local network stations.

So, Direct TV put in a "waiver request " to each of the networks.

Just received a postcard stating:

Network                  Waiver Status

ABC:                Waiver denied by your local TV stations.
CBS:                Waiver denied by your local TV stations.
NBC:                Waiver denied by your local TV stations.
FOX:                Waiver denied by your local TV stations.

My questions:

Has anyone received a waiver before?
Who at these stations makes these decisions?
What recourse, if any, do I have?
Any thoughts?

Things really came to a head when I could not watch the Football Playoffs or the SuperBowl in Hi-Def.  Was pissed.

Any thoughts??

Can you not pick up the local channels with a regular antenna?  I pick up all my local HD channels with rabbit ears.

ETA: I missed where you stated the locals are not available in HD.  Sorry about that.

Yes, they are and thats what my brother does.  The hi-def picture over the rabbit ears is much better than the directtv signal.  I would assume in a couple of years when everyone has to be hi-def we should be able to get the local channels over the satellite.

I have Dish Hi Def and watched the Super Bowl that way.

Getting local channels period depends on where you live. If you can get them from an anttena than you may not have access to them thru Direct TV or Dish. We pay five bucks extra to get them since we can't receive them from anything but a satilite.

All local channels in my area broadcast some shows in HD and some in std format whether one has a HD system or not.

The trend is more HD across the spectrum. If you have HD you should get them when they broadcast a show in that format.

He's bithching that the local channels are blocking DirecTV from sending him the network signals in HD from affiliates outside of his local viewing area.   I'd be pissed also if some local shit affiliate, let's say FOX for example, didn't broadcast in HD and refused my request to allow DirecTV  to send me the signal from another FOX affiliate that is in HD.

I have found that to be true myself.

From what I understand the only way you would ever get a waiver to receive out of market Local Channels is if you live so far out in BFE that there are really no Local Channels for you to pickup. Which in america today is pretty uch impossible unless you live in the wilds of Alaska probably.

If you want local HD channels, subscribe to cable and get a decoder box. I did this in 2004 and have not looked back. So, I generally get HD on Directv, but I also have HD through cable. It really is not that expensive. I get $10 off the cost of my high-speed internet by also having cable TV.

It is nice having both cable and a dish. If we get a strong thunderstorm (quite possible in Southeast Texas) then the dish is blocked out and I can watch cable. If we had some sort of hurricane or tornado and the cable goes out, I can immediately use my dish (if it is not destroyed by the storm).

As is true with most things on ARFCOM, GET BOTH!!!!!!!!
