Basically myself and some fellow employees told management we needed to leave after we had stayed an hour over our scheduled shift. Do they have any grounds to take disciplinary action if they so choose? I wouldn't think that they could do anything since we had worked our scheduled shift and more, but I'm just a college student so what do I know. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

dunno.

but if they need your help, and you don't have any pressing matters, it shows good character to stay. especially if you have a good attitude about it.

Just depends on what your contract says.

To many variables...

The short answer is that you can always get in trouble.  Whether or not a termination could stick is another story.

If you are in a at will state, they can do whatever they want really.

No there's no union. I work for an electronics retailer. I don't think they will do anything considering they would be screwed if they fired over half of the receiving department, but I was just curious as to if they could.  I don't mind working late, but they hired me with the knowledge that I am a full time college student and I was promised I would never have to work past 12. I have stayed late repeatedly in the past, but when I have assignments and tests due in the AM the next day, I just can't do it. Thanks for the replies guys!
