What's the best way to move a gun safe down a flight of stairs? I'm going to need to move one down a flight of about 15 stairs, it's a straight shot, no turns or landings. I have one of those '600 pound' dollys from Home Depot, but it has no special features, just a simple dolly with big inflated wheels. |

I had to move my safe a couple of weeks ago when new carpet was installed in my gun room. It was a good thing the carpet installers were a couple of stong Mexican Illegals. I used the Home Depot dolly and it worked fine, however we did not have to go down stairs. |

How big is your safe? Mine is 900 pounds empty. I would not think of doing it myself. The safe movers I hire have an electric stair-climbing/descending handtruck. the money you spend on them is better then hurting yourself, your friends or your house. Less expensive too. |
I rented one when I moved my safe. It was $35 for a half day. I was able to move it up & down my basement stair by myself(700lb. safe). |
I'd say more than 2. When I moved mine a few weeks ago, I had 2 buddies come over, and one brought his Dad, and 4 was about as close to perfect as it gets. Sure, you don't NEED them all the time, or even most of the time, but it keeps you from standing there with the safe on the dolly while someone goes around through another door to get to the side of the safe that you need help on. You have 2 people on both sides. We moved 2 safes that day, mine and a buddies. I'd want as much help as possible if I was moving it down stairs. |
