I was given this when I was 7 years old (51 now) by my grandmother.  It was found in Clay County Illinois, where my mother's side of the family were raised.  Does anyone here offer any input on this, like time period, possible tribe, etc?

Looks like a full grooved axe.   They are archaic period, but earlier than other grooved axes, so probably 4000 years old or more.

Thats a very typical axe for clay county, Illinois.  My father has been surface hunting the fields in clay county since he was a boy and is now 96 yrs old.  I've hunted  with him my entire life.   The marks on the side are from plows and disc's hitting it.  It's uncommon to find a large piece without alot of damage but points are still fairly easy to find.  If you want to see a near perfect version of your axe look here at Item #H A-6 http://whalens-artifacts.com/haxes.htm .   I have no idea if these people really get that kind of money but I have never seen anything sell for amounts near that.   Do you know where in Clay Co it was found?
