Arfcom, how many hours after death does it take for a cat to get stiff?
We got a call from a neighbor this morning. The house at the end of the block had a dead cat in their yard, looking very very similar to our cat. Parents said they let him out this morning around 6, as per usual. The corpse was rather stiff when I picked it up with the shovel. My question is this. How many hours does it take for rigor mortis to set in? Not really the way I wanted to start Father's day. |

Quoted: Ask my neighbor, he killed two of my cats...last one on Monday after telling my 10 year old daughter that if he saw her cat he would kill it. Was it in his yard attacking his dogs or shitting on his porch? We have a few neighbor cats that randomly come in my backyard and fuck with my dogs and mess with my plants, that being said I would never kill them. |

You couldn't tell by looking at it whether it was your cat? If it was yours, sorry about your loss. It is very similar. Lacked most of the teeth, like our cat. (he was almost 16) Size wise, the body was a bit larger than our cat. Guess it was Pumba. He had a good run. |

It takes a few hours in people. Cats are probably similar. 1-3 hous would be my guess. depends on the temp. My 70 lbs weimaraner died at home. She was alive at 130am and my wife found her at about 500am and he was stiff as a board. Rigor comes and then goes away too, atleast in people. J- |

I'd make it my personal goal in life to run his ass outta town, broke and scared of his own shadow |

Quoted: Don't let your cat out, it's not going to end up dead three houses down. Stupid games and stupid prizes Very true. Before I bought my house I lived in some apartments and someone who lived 20-30 apartments down from me was mad at me because my dog bit his cat on my porch.... Cat people...... |

Pets are a give and take thing with neighbors, sometimes the common ground is pretty narrow. |

Your correct, I would fuckin freak out if anyone said anything crazy to a child. The cat thing doesn't bother me because the cat was on someone elses property but bringing kids into it is WAY out of line. |

He was shot with a BB Gun. and it didn't kill him right away. That kid eventually broke into that house and a couple other neighbor's houses and stole an X-Box from another neighbor (his friends) he was arrested for Burglary at gunpoint in another town... The City PD paid him a visit! |

Sorry for your loss OP. Do you suspect your cat was killed by the neighbor or just passed away on his property? 16 years old maybe it was just time? Judging by the lack of a stomach and most internal organs, not to mention the 4" diameter hole in the gut area, it was most likely a coyote attack. He was an indoor/outdoor cat for his whole life. All of our cats have been. |

How do you not recognise your own cat especially one you have had for that many years? Well, when about 1/3 of the cat is missing, he's not upright and meowing for me to pet him or rubbing against me, it was a bit traumatic. I have seen another cat in the neighborhood on occasion that looked remarkably similar to my cat, only a little bit bigger. The corpse looked physically bigger, since my cat was looking gaunt and thin over the past few weeks. However, looking at the lack of teeth in the mouth, i am pretty sure it was my kitteh. I noticed our beagle looked different when it was dead as well. She died on our back porch and I was the only one that could hold it together long enough to take the body to the vet to be disposed of. |

Sorry for the loss. This is the chance you take when you allow any animal to roam free. If you truly care for any pet you will protect it from outside harm and protect others from any form of nuisance behaviors. My parents live in a nice quiet neighborhood. Never really had many issues. The cats we have had were always indoor/outdoor cats. The only real problems we had with Pumba was when the new family moved in next door a few years back. They had several cats that were indoor/outdoor as well. One was a bit of a bully and fought with and attacked our cat on a regular basis. That cat died a few years ago. |

Cat people can't be tough, you know. I have seen a full patched outlaw biker in tears over going to jail and leaving his cat unattended. |
