I will be putting a simple network computer setup in a friends new house later tonight. I am familiar but not the expert when it comes to computer wiring thru walls. The current setup is wireless in the old house. I noticed last night that what I thought were two phone jacks in the new house is actually a phone jack and a CAT5 jack. I did not get the opportunity to go any deeper into it but I would like to take the opportunity and take advantage of the in-wall network wiring. I have no testers other than trying it out with the computer. Is there a "phone room" in the house somewhere (as in where is it usually?) This would be my first time trying this and the only reason I am trying is that I ASSUME the wiring is all done and that it is simply plug and play with the router. I saw the same setup in our office with our phone room one level below. I did not do the wriring myself, I only saw it done. But once done it was simply a matter of plugging the ends of the CAT5 cables into the router and hanging the router on the wall then plugging the computers into the wall jack in the office. Again, I ASSUME it will be the same in this house once I found out where all the CAT5 cables meet up. Tips/Tricks?? thanks, Dan |

you are correct about the "wiring room." it is usually located in the basement or garage. if the contractors were nice, they will have labeled the ports for you. bring a short (3ft or less) cable for each room you want to hook up. If there are more than 4 rooms that need to be hooked up, you will need an additional switch to go with the router. if the cable modem/dsl modem isn't in the wiring room, move it there. If that is not possible, use the existing cat5 wiring in the house to send the WAN traffic to the router in the basement/wiring room. let us know how it goes. |
thanks. and yes, its a DSL setup. I'll find out later tonight if the Telco has a jack in the "phone room" with the right activation, lol
