I'm a Junior in college and we had a couple of guest speaking police officers from the San Antonio PD. They told us if we had accumulated some sort of debt it would disqualify you from getting a job. Is that true of that dept only or is that pretty common among all agencies? That would be specifically student debt from loans.

Jesus...good luck to them in finding qualified candidates that haven't accumulated some sort of debt.  I'm inclined to believe they were referring to credit problems, ie. bankruptcies, foreclosures, repossessions, significant history of late payments, etc.  Either that or nobody at SAPD has a mortgage, a car loan, or any credit cards.

Poor credit history can be indicative of poor decision-making, poor impulse control, lack of responsibility, etc.  Having a mortgage, a car loan, or a credit card or two is considered perfectly normal in most places.  In this economy it is becoming more and more normal to encounter good people with some credit issues.

i'm not aware of any hard and fast rules, i've seen some people get hired with all sorts of terrible stuff in their credit history.  But like someone else said it shows you aren't very responsible.

Some agencies look at it as a trust issue. Someone with no serious debt is less likely to be tempted by a bribe.

Correct, CC history/debt is indicative of lack of responsibility and fiscal mgmt.  Lots of people get rolled up in backgrounds due to finance related stuff.

But I would imagine with the poor economy many good folks are affected with no fault due to themselves  (ie. short sale of home etc.).
