Whats the point of the fins with vent holes on the bipod?
7/9/2008 7:45:37 PM EDT
[#1]
Lightening cuts I'm guessing.
7/9/2008 7:46:04 PM EDT

As a former M60 gunner who could still take it apart in his sleep 17 years after last touching one I can say I have no clue.

As long as you can nail a position 300m away with it is all that matters right?

300 meters thats point blank for the m60a3! I know you arfcommers are bad shots but jeez talk about not being able to hit the broad side of the barn!

+1, and you will be thankful they took the time to lighten the load somewhere after you have to hump that pig any amount of distance.

IIRC the max effective range was supposedly 1100m.

The holes are for lightening. The fins protect the barrel when the bipod is folded, or they protect other stuff from a hot barrel.

Yep, for most of the time I was a 60 gunner,  (1980's)the max range was 3725meters,
Max Effective range was 1100m
THEN, they changed it to "The max effective range is as far as you can
successfully engage the target..."... Wow, that was a long time ago.....

Yeah, our m240 gunners in my platoon could easily hit targets at 600-800 meters with their MGs.

Who is your question for?

If for myself, which i doubt, then nope.

ETA: I would post another pic but PB is down for repair.

One of these days I'll get a scanner.  I was a 60 gunner while serving in the 82nd and jumped the pig into Panama.  I have a photo of myself and my M60 (Trixie) standing next to a shot-to-hell PDF jeep at Patilla (the whole airport was pretty shot up).

Anything to lighten the weight on a trooper's shoulders was greatly appreciated by grunt pig gunners.  That I can promise you.

The holes are to cool the barrel efficiently, meaning that overheating is never a problem.

No, my question is for PhatForrest, he wanted a place where he could shoot...and shoot at the same time, i merely suggest he find or create a private range.

No kidding, seeing how the sling that usually came with it was always broke or never seemed to stay hooked.
