I'm expected to do a holocaust-themed art piece for my drawing class on the subject of, "And Then They Fought Back" ...when exactly did the Jews fight back during the holocaust? |
| The numbers of Jews claimed to have been killed during the Holocaust were exaggerated. While there was a large number, it was no where near 6 million. You could always tan a hide and call it a lamp shade. Is this supposed to be a PC project ??? Because anything should be excepted if it is a true art class..... Do something that will cause people to actually step back and say something..... a Shower Head would be good too.... make people think....make people confront their feelings on the subject..... |
 This kind of discussion is not welcome. The art piece will be about Jewish resistance during the holocaust. It has nothing to do with what you are talking about. I thank the rest of you for your help. It has set me in the right direction for researching my subject. Thank you.

Not really sorry, but that wasn't my purpose to get you bent. Maybe you can sculpt a giant Menorah, and make it into a gun and each of the 7 candle holders can actually be a gun barrel and you can make it exterminating those terrible Nazis ! There was also an uprising at Treblinka but it was put down harshly. 1500 individuals revolted and only 40 survived. |

Nazi's like to make a myth out of the numbers of Jews they murdered, this is nothing new. I would also like to point out the incredibly insensitive statement about the lamp shade. Did you know the Nazi's made lamp shades out of the skin of murdered Jews? I think you need to educate yourself about true history and unlearn the revisionist shit and show some sensitivity, please. |

| The thing is the Nazi’s also murdered other people besides Jews. The mentally or physically handicapped, one sect of Christianity who name eludes me for the moment, homosexuals, almost any member of the “Sub-human” races, i.e.; Slavs, Russians ,Gypsies, etc., and just about anybody who spoke against them. There is more to that Death List; I just can’t remember more of them. |

If I had any artistic ability at all, I'd probably paint/draw a ghetto building - shown from an almost parallel view with the 3rd floor looking slightly down. A Jew leaning out of the window (recognizable by the star of david armband) firing a K98 or MP44 at a group of 3 germans - one lying dying, one running, and one just being shot & falling. Of course, if I did it, it would be stick figures. with sticks that shoot sticks and little dots. |
| There's a DVD out "Escape from Sobibor" from the TV movie starring Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer. What everyone has to remember is that the Nazi's decided who was a Jew, someone could have had a Jewish grandfather they never met and they would be re-classified. They turned on WWI veterans. |

I tell you what... We got our education on the Holocaust in 7th grade social studies. Lots and lots of pictures, not the PC bullshit pics of statues and memorials but the original pics from when the camps were liberated. It was simply presented for the tragedy it was with very limited political commentary. But it was made perfectly clear that it happened. I didn't even know any Jews growing up, there was no Synagogue in my town, so there was no Jew conspiracy. When we covered this in school, my mom told me about when we were in Germany ('74-'75) and she had gone to one of the camps with some friends. It was basically as it was when they cleaned out the bodies, they just left it. Now it's all sparkley and clean, a tribute to government! Nah man, this is never a subject to take lightly. And remember the first step that got the Jews there, CONFISCATION OF PRIVATELY OWNED ARMS. |

But the thing is, Stalin killed a shitload of people, sure...but it's not as if that hadn't been done many times before. He killed people because he considered them potential enemies. His only notoriety is that he killed millions of people. But so did Atilla, so did the Mongols, so did the Turks. The reason the Holocaust is a noteworthy (if, unfortunately, not unique) occurence is that the Nazis decided to kill off every single member of a certain ethnic group for no other reason than that they made a convenient scapegoat. They weren't a contestant for ownership of disputed territory, they weren't a hereditary rival who had a claim to the throne, they weren't an ancient enemy who had done wrong to the Germans hundreds of years before. They were just an insular ethnic group set apart by religious differences that HAD been very loyal Germans and they were targetted just because they made a good focus for the frustration and hatred of the German people, then systematically exterminated. |

WIthout directing this comment to any particular poster, let me say this: A visit to the Smithsonian Holocaust Museum in D.C. is a very worthwhile experience. I don't think most Americans under the age of about 75 have a clue what happened. Give yourself about 3-4 hours for the visit and don't expect to do anything fun after you leave. |
+1 Out of all the things I learned (or didn't) in high school, when my history teacher got to World War II, and the Holocaust, I can say that the pictures I've seen and the stories I've read were quite possibly the most intense and life altering things I've ever experienced. And to the lamp shade jackass, I think you need to take a long walk off a short pier. |
I'm sure the 4-6 million Christian Ukrainians who were starved by Stalin, Molotov and Kaganovich will be comforted to know that they were killed for less objectionable reasons.  These kind of statements always bother me. Killing people for ideological reasons is always wrong, whether the motivations are religion, class or race. Do you really think that the Nazis killing Jews was inherently worse that say, the Khmer Rouge killing Catholics or educated people? |
Oh, I totally disagree. I'm 35, and have as much as an understanding as any person alive at the time, who was not directly involved in the liberation, a prisoner, or a family member of a victim of this horrid crime. But that is not to say we don't need a periodic reminder of what can happen when government rules instead of governs. |
