Went to the gym today, went out of obligation. I didnt do my sets as well as I wouldve liked, so my question is this. If you are doing sets and not performing the way you should for that day, should I jus not worry about completing or should I jus lower the weight to get some kind of work out? I use to read muscle mags years ago and read an article about Arnold going to the gym and not "feeling" it and jus skipping the work out all together. Im sure this works on occasion, but I would be afraid it would become habit. ANy thoughts. |
If you're injecting the same quantities of D-Bol that Arnold was, then by all means do as he did. ![]() Seriously, this is a question that only you can answer. Are you over-training? Are you under-eating? Are you just being a big baby? Some of my best workouts have come when I felt like crap at the beginning of my workout but then forced myself to grit it out and get it done. |
Oh I understand what your saying. Ive tried to force thru the work out. but if im jus not feeling it, I usually cant push past it. |

More often than not, if your workout sucks, it's because something isn't consistent with when it was awesome. Sleep, hydration, or how much you ate are the big three. I would suggest finishing out, but safely. If your light-headed after a heavy set, don't ego-lift more. Just use the empty bar and make everyone think you're warming down or checking your form. If you start letting yourself skip because you're not "feeling it", I think you'll find yourself skipping more and more. |
i agree. I do try to be consistant of the time of day, what I eat, etc etc etc. My routines are that regimented. I jus go about 3-4 times a week and mix things up from universal machine stuff to running on treadmill. |

On days that I'm not "feeling" it... like last night, I work through. I may not push myself as hard, but I just go back to medium weight, high reps instead of going big. Last night, I was dumbell pressing 115#, but wasn't feeling. Last month, I was able to rep out 125# dumbell presses. So my 3rd set of 115# was only 4 reps. I decided that I needed to add a 4th set at 115#. It was only a 4 rep set. Was I focused and trying as much as I should? Probably not. But I tried to work through it. And that's what you should do. Yeah. I didnt last time, and that is what got me thinking about it in the first place. I think ill jus drop weight and go for higher reps. I ran today and it was sorta the same thing, but I pushed thru it. Wasnt too bad. I know its worth it AFTER im done, but not during. lol |
| I guess my philosophy is a little different. I keep a fairly detailed log of every workout and have a specific idea ahead of time of what I want to accomplish - more weight, more reps, new movement, etc. If the energy just isn't there, for whatever reason, I'd rather put everything into meeting the goal on one compound lift and be done or just do something totally unplanned & different (sprints, burpees, throw a medicine ball, etc.). I don't know if that's the correct course of action, but it feels like such a waste of time to half-ass my way through an entire workout. |
