I just finished watching "The Living Daylights" on Spike TV.  Since you are a luthier, answer a question for me.  The character Kara Milovy's cello is shot.  Wouldn't putting a bullet hole in a cello (or any string instrument for that matter) totally screw up the sound that the instrument makes?  I was just wondering about that.

Obviously I'm not cmjohnson, but I do know Willie Nelson plays a guitar that is about as fucked up as you can imagine. The face of the guitar is all cracked and there is a large hole extending out from the soundhole, and it still sounded fine to me. It was electrified if it makes any different.

Thanks for the reply.  I imagine that electric and acoustic are two different animals.

I do believe that the most sensitive part of the cello is the soundpost.  I don't think that a bullet hole that did not disturb the soundpost would affect it that greatly.

It would only alter the tuning of the projected 'voice' of the instrument, like putting a second port in a loudspeaker enclosure. Take a look at the ovation acoustic guitar, there are MANY holes in it, but as long as the tuning works, it's fine.
