I recently drove to Florida and back for vacation and was struck by how the tractor trailer trucks were maintaining the speed limit religiously......what's up with that? I drove one summer ( in a rig that wouldn't go over 63 mph) and all the OTR guys drove like satan himself was after them.

What has changed?

I think alot of the big companies have their rigs governed.

This. Insurance for ungoverned trucks costs more. Plus mpg goes to crap for most trucks after 75mph.

He is.   Deal with the DOT a few times and grossly inflated fines for a violation in a commercial truck..  You'll see why.

The real question is why do truckers feel it is necessary to pass another truck that is going 0.005 mph slower than themselves?

Fuck every one of them that does this! You're going 60.0, but I'm going 60.25 so I'll pass you in about 10 minutes while all the cars trying to go 78 are behind me. Fuck that shit.

Amen, it's so fucking obnoxious and is such a waste of time. Just draft and don't pass or pass when there isn't a steady stream of cars trying to do 75-80.

That gets passed on. And having a powerful truck that can run faster allows you to do more runs, so it washes out.

A lot of fleets don't hire drivers smart enough to drive a turned up Cat or Cummins, though.

You get fucked enough times by cars cutting in front of you and then slowing down, you'll drive like you own the road.

ETA: Limiters are a big reason they pass like that. I've had my doors blown off at 70 mph going up Raton Pass by an empty log truck doing about 80.

This. Any company with a fleet of trucks will have them governed between 60-65mph, mostly to conserve fuel. O/O probably won't bother with the governor.

The average fleet spec truck is governed to low to help saving fuel. Often its the opposite. It's mostly done for insurance reasons. I get best mpg ~70 mph or 1400 rpm. Point is most fleet drivers are just a warm body along for the ride.

If I could get one of those that wasn't lifted in the air... and didn't have a retarded topper, I'd buy one to haul our farm equipment with. Then you might as well get a 4700 and add a short Bradford on it.

We only own a couple trucks and haul mostly our own goods we sell so take this for what it's worth.

According to everything we penciled out it was quite a bit cheaper to turn the trucks down and pay extra labor with less loads. I don't remember the exact numbers, this was last year that we did it.

One of our drivers quit over it, said there was no way it was worth it to do that. He was hourly so idk why it even mattered to him.

Non EGR Detroit, 255 rears, 13 speed. Spend most of my time on I-40 & 20, gross is normally 78k and get 7+ mpg

My last truck was a 2011 Century with a DD-15 (non-DEF), 10-speed and 2.64 gears, governed to 63mph.  Best pulling truck I ever drove.  Running in the northeast loaded up to 79,000lb I could get 4 to 5 mpg on the I-81, I-80 and I-40 corridors.  Same load down south and in the Midwest mileage would climb to 7 to 8mpg.  Climbing those hills makes a big difference.
