I've been watching this show since I was a kid. Still love the re-runs and I'm watching one now.
Something I've noticed in many episodes throughout the series is that they frequently refer to my home town area as locations for scenes. That's the Allentown/Bethlehem area of the Lehigh Valley in PA. They don't refer to it accurately. They name places that don't exist around here. Certain hospitals/medical centers, government offices, etc. But what's the significance of it? Was someone affiliated with the show from this area or something? Thanks -Emt1581 |

Why is it always dark?
Even stories that take place during the daytime, everywhere they go its dark.
They go in a building, never even think about turning on the lights or opening the blinds, just break out the pen light and walk around in the dark looking for the monsters. |

Home was set in WV. go figure. Pretty sure Home was set in an actual small town in southwest PA ( |

I do remember seeing some interviews with Chris Carter who said that they chose locations, especially in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th seasons and forward, as a "reward" for the markets that made them so successful...I remember they used Buffalo as a setting for an episode.
One thing, as the OP said, it seems like they chose the locations, but didn't really do a ton of research....for example, the Buffalo episode referred to "Chinatown", and the Triads....there is no Chinatown in Buffalo, nor did Buffalo ever have an problems with Asian gangs.... Don't forget they did all the filming in Vancouver, and really had no budget for location stuff at least for the first couple of years.... |

Thanks -Emt1581 I remember watching that exact episode and going "That's not Allentown!" Apparently for the first or more seasons, it was filmed in the PNW area IIRC |

I also agree that, Home was extremely disturbing. Beside there seeming to be no fish left in Keystone power dam, that may be the main reason I don't go fishing up there anymore. They should have made a similar/creepy episode in Dunbar, Pa. Now the peacocks would not be stretching the truth too far down there at all. And mulder and scully could have went grocery shopping in the old pechins market, with its dirt floor. That area (dunbar creek ) is definitely a place you don't want to be hanging around in after dark, if you don't have "kin" from there. |
| The quasi made up locations and businesses and stores etc are to keep the crazies who would go there IRL and cause issues away. Same thing with CSI Las Vegas, LOTS of almost made up locations, places a local would know when they talk about it but the name they used would sometimes be way off. For instance they would always refer to "Desert Palms Hospital" well, it's actually Desert Springs Hospital. It's also no where near the strip like they always claim it is in the show, it is on the east side of town. Things like this. |

Thanks -Emt1581 They don't want to get fucked on liability for slander defamation etc. ETA PA is very film friendly (tax breaks etc) and lots of behind the scenes guys come out of Pa. It wouldn't be hard to cross check the credits for second unit, location guys or the production crew for their education credentials. I bet some came from Penn State. |

I'm going to have to watch some youtube clips of it. The episode isn't ringing a bell. EDIT: Nevermind, as soon as I saw the house I knew right away. Always struck me as the inbred/Wrong Turn episode. Thanks -Emt1581 |

They also did an episode about Home, PA that wasn't anything like Home, PA but it was a pretty dark episode. When it originally came out I was going to college nearby and people who weren't familiar with the area thought holy shit, there's incest there! I think the episode with the Japanese scientist/train (the start of that story arc) began in your area with Mulder chasing down some Japanese guy. |
| A year ago I finished watching all the seasons again I don't watch a lot of things twice but the x files are awesome. Also I watched a lot of the Terminator episodes for the first time on Netflix. At first I was disappointed as usual but I hung in there and he did great. Also I found Scully hotter now than back when I was a kid. |

Used to fish the power damn and hunt on a property right up the road. Ive lived in SWPA most of my life, and some areas can get downright creepy real quick. |

When it started out she was a little "frumpy". It looked like she lost some weight and toned up in later seasons. The episode where she became a dirty inky and got the tramp stamp orobouros snake was pretty hot. |

That's about 45 minutes south of Indiana County, right against the WV line. Yeah, some things and people down there gotta be seen to be believed. |

I used to work with this guy russel. He thought x-files was a documentary. Swore up and down that every episode was based on real FBI investigations. He was a good kid, but pretty goofy.
Also, when he applied for his job he brought his wife, and let her do the talking in the interview. |
