My Pioneer VSX5900S just gave up the ghost (OK I know it's old and ain't that great as audio systems go)...
I need to replace it.
I'm considering staying with the Pioneer line only because all the rest of my audio stuff is Pioneer.
I have an entry level surround sound system.
I'm thinking of the Pioneer Elite VSX-41.
Anyone have any experience with this model?
Or perhaps tell me what other brands I should be looking for (under $1000).
I'm not a hard core A/V guy, I just want good acceptable audio and the capability to hear the latest surround sound performance.

I wouldnt hesitate to buy Pioneer Elite components. I have a Pioneer Elite HDTV and it is sweet. In the price range you are interested in I would go for one that has at least DTS/dolby digital and has a lot of plug-ins/outs for multiple components.  I still use a set of Pioneer HPM-100 speakers that I bought in 1978, still sound good.

Pioneer Elite equipment is good stuff, even though these days it's not built to a clearly superior standard in relation to the 'consumer grade' models that they're based on.

The Elites of years back were sometimes based on consumer models but they were built to a much higher standard, with better components, more robust chassis, and attention to little internal details (like foil shielding every electrolytic capacitor) that just wasn't done on the regular models.

These days, Elites are different models entirely, and they ARE better than the standard offerings by better component selection, but they no longer put extra effort into the chassis.

Here's a thought:

Check Ebay and look for a slightly older Elite model.  You can get a HUGE bang for your buck that way.

For example, consider THIS:

This IS an older unit... but it's a fine product and the older Pioneer Elites with the wood sides have an elegance that can't be matched.  And it'll do what you want it to, for sure.

It looks like this:

By modern standards, some of its features are a bit dated, but in terms of performance, well, Elites of this generation have a sterling reputation for sound quality and they do have a lot of capability still.   It was Pioneer's top  model in its time.

For 300 bucks, it's a no brainer, if it's in good working order.  I'd jump on it myself if I were shopping for a receiver, but I'm dedicated 100 percent to separates.

It should outperform an entry level new Elite like the one you mentioned.

Get the ONKYO 787 and be done with it.

It can handle all the new surround formats, has an optical link for fiber from dvd, and is relatively inexpensive.  ($800).

And will last years and years.

I gotta recommend Pioneer Elite too. I have a VSX-47TX, although that is out of your stated price range, but there are some that are under $1000. I have Pioneer components that date from the mid 1970's that still work great! Granted, they now live in the basement and the garage, but that is an even bigger statement of their reliability since they are still used very frequently. If you buy used, I would advise you to avoid the VSX-27TX since there is a known problem with that unit. As the original owner of one, I was given a replacement (and a huge upgrade) for mine in the VSX-47TX. One thing Pioneer has always had, in my experience, is great customer service. Buy a new one in your price range and you won't go wrong.
