I wanted to see if the outlet that a garbage disposal was on a GFCI circuit.  When tested, it shows and open hot, but it works.  I tried my tester in other outlets and it seems to work fine but not in the disposal outlets (I tried them both).  I plan to replace the outlet anyway but I don't understand the open hot on a working outlet.

By open hot are you saying the receptacle doesn't show to powered with your tester?

If that's the case the hot and neutral could be swapped on the receptacle. White wire goes to silver screws and black/hot wire goes to gold.

I haven't opened it up yet, going to get a GFCI outlet and open it, I can't wait to see what's inside.  The tester shows no lights (open), not reversed. Yep, hot (black) goes to small slot, brass.
